A Nigerian Army officer, Colonel Timothy Ajato, has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first international fellow to win the prestigious Frank Kelly Writing Award at the United States Army War College (USAWC) in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. This information was disclosed in a statement released through the army's official social media channels.
Historic Achievement at USAWC
The Frank Kelly Writing Award is regarded as the highest academic writing honor at the institution. Colonel Ajato received the award after graduating with honors from the Academic Year 2026 program, where he ranked among the top-performing officers in a class of 365 senior military officers and strategic leaders from the United States and allied nations.
According to the Nigerian Army, this is the first time an international student has been presented with the Frank Kelly Writing Award since the college's establishment. The recognition also includes a United States Army War College Foundation Life Membership and other distinguished benefits.
Academic Excellence and Contributions
In addition to the award, Colonel Ajato earned a Master's Degree in Strategic Studies, highlighting his academic excellence and expertise in strategic and security affairs. The army further noted that his accomplishments extended beyond academic performance. He developed sample model answers that were approved by the college for future Oral Comprehensive Examinations. These models are expected to serve as reference materials for subsequent student cohorts at the institution.
The United States Army War College is one of the world's leading military educational institutions, tasked with preparing senior military officers and civilian leaders for strategic-level leadership and national security responsibilities.
Reflection of Nigerian Army's Reputation
The Nigerian Army described Colonel Ajato's achievement as a reflection of the growing reputation of its personnel in international military institutions. It also serves as a testament to ongoing efforts to develop highly skilled strategic leaders capable of addressing contemporary security challenges.
The feat aligns with the command philosophy of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, which seeks to transform the army into a more professional, adaptable, combat-ready, and resilient force. This transformation aims to enable the army to effectively discharge its constitutional responsibilities within joint and multi-agency environments.
The army added that this accomplishment highlights its commitment to investing in professional military education and leadership development to enhance national and global peace and security efforts.
