The Osun State Government has declared Wednesday, June 17, 2026, as a public holiday to commemorate Hijira 1448 AH, the Islamic New Year. The announcement was made in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Rasheed Aderibigbe, and released to the press in Osogbo on Tuesday.
Celebration of Islamic New Year
According to Aderibigbe, the holiday marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year. He stated, "Osun State Government is pleased to announce that Wednesday, 17th June, 2026, will be observed as a Public Holiday to commemorate Hijira 1448 AH. This celebration marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year."
The commissioner extended warm greetings to Muslim brothers and sisters on behalf of the state government, expressing hope that the occasion would bring peace, prosperity, and unity to Osun State.
Call for Peaceful Celebrations
The government encouraged residents to avoid rancor and disharmony and instead participate joyfully in festivities that promote unity and togetherness. The statement emphasized, "However, residents are encouraged to shun rancour and disharmony and joyfully participate in festivities and celebrations promoting unity and togetherness."
The Islamic year 1448 AH begins on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, following the sighting of the Muharram crescent moon. This lunar year spans from June 16, 2026, to approximately June 5, 2027, on the Gregorian calendar.
