College Provost Issues Stern Warning Against Anti-Social Vices
Dr. Onuoba Paul Chuks, the Provost of the Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology (FCFMT) in Lagos, has delivered a strong message to students, urging them to resist groups that promote violence and negative behaviors. Speaking at the 2026 matriculation ceremony, he emphasized the importance of maintaining integrity and focus on education.
Zero Tolerance for Negative Activities
Dr. Chuks explicitly cautioned students against engaging in or planning to participate in a range of anti-social activities. He stated, "students engaging in or planning to engage in secret cultism, gangsterism, Internet fraud, money rituals, fighting, intimidation, hard drugs, disobedience to constituted authorities, prostitution, indecent dressing and unnecessary disruption of academic calendar should either change and pursue the path of integrity or be shown the way out." This warning underscores the college's commitment to a safe and productive learning environment.
Focus on Academic Success
Further advising the students, Dr. Chuks highlighted the financial and academic consequences of neglecting their studies. He said, "My candid advice is that you should not allow these activities to conflict with your education because carry over and non-progression to year two can be very expensive to both parents and students. So, be wary." He also stressed the management's zero tolerance for examination malpractices, urging students to familiarize themselves with all examination regulations.
Encouragement for Discipline and Hard Work
In conclusion, the Provost encouraged students to be hardworking, disciplined, and to keep their main objectives in focus. He reminded them that their primary goal is to acquire quality education and skills for a successful career in life. This call to action aims to inspire students to make the most of their time at the institution.
Governing Board Chairman Highlights Marine Potential
On his part, MacDonald Kelechi Ebere, Chairman of the Governing Board of FCFMT, observed that Nigeria is blessed with vast marine and inland water resources. He noted, "our oceans, rivers, and coastal ecosystems hold enormous potential for food security, employment, technological advancement, and economic growth. Institutions like FCFMT exist to unlock that potential through knowledge, innovation, and a skilled workforce."
Preparing for a Rapidly Changing World
Addressing the students, Ebere advised them to be prepared for a dynamic future. He said, "you are entering a world that is changing rapidly. Knowledge is expanding. Technology is evolving. The demands of society are increasing. The future will belong to those who are prepared, disciplined and willing to learn continuously." This perspective reinforces the importance of adaptability and lifelong learning in today's global landscape.
