The University of Ibadan (UI) has introduced a free change-of-mode option for 2026 Post-UTME candidates who may not secure admission into its conventional programmes, allowing them to switch to the Open, Distance and eLearning (ODeL) route. Applications close on August 15, 2026, and the special cohort begins on August 17, 2026. While the change-of-mode application is free for eligible candidates, tuition and other academic fees still apply.
Eligibility and Application Process
According to Prof. Olufade Onifade, Director of the University of Ibadan Distance Learning Centre (UIDLC), the initiative targets 2026 UI Post-UTME candidates who are qualified but could not be placed in conventional programmes due to limited spaces. "This is an opportunity for such candidates to still earn a University of Ibadan degree through the Distance Learning Centre," he said in an official press release.
To apply, candidates must visit the UI change-of-mode portal at modeofstudy.ui.edu.ng and log in with their Post-UTME details. They then select the ODeL mode and an available programme for which they qualify. The application is free for those who sat for the 2026 UI Post-UTME. Direct entry applicants who did not participate in the Post-UTME must pay standard application fees.
JAMB CAPS Requirements
Candidates are reminded that changing mode on the UI portal does not complete the admission process. They must monitor JAMB CAPS, complete any required change of institution or course, and accept the offer when it appears. JAMB's official Change of Course/Institution service is available for this purpose. After acceptance, candidates should obtain their JAMB Admission Letter.
Available Courses
The ODeL pathway includes NUC-approved programmes across sciences, social sciences, arts, education, and social work. B.Sc. programmes include Computer Science, Economics, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, and Statistics. B.A. programmes include English and Communication and Language Arts. Other programmes include B.Ed. Educational Management and B.Sw. Social Work. Candidates should confirm current availability and specific requirements on the UIDLC admission page.
Admission Routes and Requirements
UIDLC admits students through both O'Level and Direct Entry routes. The O'Level route requires five credits at one sitting or six credits at two sittings, including English Language, with relevant subjects for the chosen course. Accepted results include WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, and GCE. Direct Entry candidates may use A'Levels, NCE, OND/ND, HND, diplomas, or previous degrees, subject to programme requirements.
Mode of Learning and Key Dates
ODeL combines digital learning materials, virtual classes, and a learning management system, but also includes physical interactive sessions. Students need reliable internet access and a suitable device, preferably a laptop or computer. The curriculum and degree are identical to those of conventional students, with the only difference being the mode of delivery.
Key dates: application deadline is August 15, 2026; the special cohort starts August 17, 2026. The change-of-mode fee is free for eligible 2026 UI Post-UTME candidates. Candidates should complete the process early and rely only on official UI, UIDLC, and JAMB channels. Remember: free change of mode does not mean free tuition.
