Lionel Messi Expresses Regret Over Not Learning English in Youth
Inter Miami CF superstar Lionel Messi has openly admitted that one of his biggest personal regrets is not learning English while he was growing up. Despite achieving unparalleled success in his football career, the Argentine icon described this as a significant shortcoming that has impacted his life off the pitch.
Podcast Revelation on Language Limitations
Messi made this candid revelation during a recent appearance on the podcast Miro de Atrás. He reflected on specific moments where his inability to speak English made him feel restricted, especially when interacting with global personalities and influential figures from around the world.
"To not have learned English as a boy. I had the time to at least study it and I didn't. I deeply regret it," stated the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner. "I experienced situations where I was with incredible personalities, able to talk and have a chat, and you feel half ignorant."
Lessons for His Children and Future Generations
The football legend expressed that he often thinks about how he wasted valuable time during his youth by not prioritizing language education. He now uses this experience as a teaching moment for his own children, emphasizing the critical importance of a solid education and thorough preparation for life's opportunities.
"I always thought, 'What an idiot, how I wasted my time.' When you're young, you don't realise it. Today, that's what I tell my children, the importance of having a good education, studying and being prepared," Messi explained.
He highlighted that his children are growing up in circumstances vastly different from his own childhood in Argentina, where he never lacked the essentials but missed out on certain educational avenues. Messi constantly encourages them to maximize their opportunities and learn from his past oversights.
Football as a Lifelong Teacher
Despite his regrets about language learning, Messi acknowledged that football has been an immensely powerful teacher throughout his illustrious career. After joining Inter Miami in 2023 following a two-year stint at Paris Saint-Germain F.C., he reflected on the broader lessons the sport has imparted.
"I was able to do everything and reach the top in football, but along the way there are many experiences and lessons learned," he said. "It's true that football is a way of life. It teaches you a lot, gives you strong values, creates lifelong bonds, and allows you to discover new places."
Messi's heartfelt admission underscores a universal message about the value of education and lifelong learning, resonating far beyond the football field. His story serves as a reminder that even global icons face personal challenges and regrets, making his advice to younger generations all the more poignant and impactful.
