Vice President Kashim Shettima has given his strong backing to a major initiative aimed at digitally transforming classrooms across Nigeria. The proposal, presented by Indian firms Schoolnet India Ltd and Learnet Skills Ltd, seeks a collaboration with the Federal Government and private partners to roll out the innovative KYAN smart class solution in schools nationwide.
A "School in a Box" for Digital Learning
During a meeting on Monday, December 1, 2025, with a delegation led by Schoolnet India's Managing Director and CEO, Mr. RCM Reddy, Senator Shettima welcomed the plan. He described the KYAN package as a rugged and versatile technological tool capable of delivering significant value in Nigerian classrooms.
Mr. Reddy explained that KYAN, often called "a school in a box," is an all-in-one solution. It comes equipped with an integrated projector, a high-end computer, smart-board capabilities, a camera, and AI-enabled features. The system is preloaded with digital content for grades 1 through 10 and functions both online and offline, making it suitable for areas with limited internet access.
Call for Localisation and Customisation
While expressing optimism about the project's promise, Vice President Shettima emphasized the critical need for full localisation. He directed the Schoolnet team to work with relevant Federal Government officials to adapt the solution to reflect Nigeria's specific educational curriculum and realities.
"The beauty of KYAN is that it is a very rugged machine. You can use one card to teach 70 students," Shettima stated. He highlighted his particular interest in packages for primary and secondary schools, similar to what was deployed in Borno State during his tenure as governor. "Honestly speaking, the Indian version of English is different from our own. Maybe you can use AI to customise it to our local curriculum," he advised.
The Vice President pointed to successful indigenous smart school models in Edo and Enugu States as examples that could be harmonised with the KYAN technology.
Commitment to a Tailored Nigerian Solution
In response to the Vice President's directive, Mr. Reddy pledged his company's commitment to developing a customised solution for Nigeria. He noted that the introduction of KYAN in Borno State had already led to improved teacher performance, supported by comprehensive training programmes.
"We are very committed to developing a solution customised for Nigeria," Reddy assured. "If used properly, with the entire ecosystem in place, an average teacher will become a good teacher; a good teacher will become very good; and a very good teacher can become a star teacher."
The initiative ultimately seeks to enhance learning outcomes by introducing interactive smart boards, digital content, and other innovative tools, particularly at the primary and secondary school levels across the country.
