JAMB Takes Strict Measures for 2026 UTME, Excludes Non-Compliant CBT Centres
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced a significant decision to exclude certain computer-based test (CBT) centres from participating in the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). This move comes as the board intensifies efforts to enhance the integrity and security of the examination process across Nigeria.
Mandatory CCTV Installation for Real-Time Monitoring
JAMB has issued fresh and detailed guidelines requiring all accredited CBT centres to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems in every corner of their facilities. The board explained that this measure is essential to provide authorities with real-time oversight of operations from the JAMB headquarters in Abuja. According to the board, centres lacking these monitoring devices will not be used for the 2026 UTME registration or examination activities.
The decision was reached during a high-level meeting involving JAMB Registrar Professor Is-haq Oloyede, stakeholders, Peace Monitors, Chief Technical Advisers, Chief External Examiners, and zonal and state coordinators responsible for monitoring CBT centres. This collaborative approach underscores JAMB's commitment to leaving no stone unturned in ensuring a seamless and credible examination process.
Specific CCTV Models and Placement Requirements
To maximize digital security and prevent manipulation, JAMB has specified exact CCTV models that centres must use. Professor Oloyede communicated that only Microsoft and Digitech cameras are permitted, and they must be connected via wired systems rather than wireless connections, which are considered more susceptible to tampering.
Furthermore, existing centres have been ordered to migrate to HIKVision Closed Circuit Television systems, with HIKVision recommended as the Network Video Recorder or Digital Video Recorder. These recorders must have a minimum of 16 channels to ensure comprehensive coverage of all critical areas within the examination centre.
The cameras must cover:
- The examination area
- Verification area
- Holding room
- Walkways
- Examination hall
- Server room
- Entrance and exit doors
Background and Rationale for Stringent Measures
JAMB's stringent conditions are a direct response to incidents during the 2025 UTME, where some centres were found to be digitally manipulating live CCTV footage. Professor Oloyede revealed that these centres have been delisted and are currently facing prosecution. This proactive stance aims to avoid a recurrence of such malpractices and uphold the credibility of the examination system.
As registration for the 2026 UTME commenced nationwide on Monday, January 26, JAMB has assured Nigerians that it will do everything in its power to deliver the best obtainable and seamless service to candidates. The board has also released detailed registration guidelines, requiring prospective candidates to have a National Identification Number (NIN) and an email address, among other details.
The sale of JAMB 2026 UTME forms is scheduled from January 31, 2026, to March 8, 2026, with all requirements already published. This comprehensive approach reflects JAMB's dedication to improving educational standards and ensuring fairness in the tertiary admission process.
