Ondo Governor Aiyedatiwa Launches Wage Review Committee for Polytechnic
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has officially approved the formation of a dedicated committee to oversee the review of the new minimum wage implementation at Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo (RUGIPO). This strategic move comes alongside the governor's decision to clear three months of outstanding salary arrears owed to the institution's workforce, providing immediate financial relief to both academic and non-academic staff who have experienced delays in their remuneration.
Addressing Salary Discrepancies and Ensuring Compliance
The establishment of this committee follows a series of intensive engagements between the Ondo State government, the polytechnic's management, and various labour unions, focusing on harmonising payment schedules for staff. According to a statement released by Chief Press Secretary Ebenezer Adeniyan, the primary objective is to resolve recurring discrepancies in salary disbursements and ensure full adherence to the national minimum wage framework. The newly constituted committee will be chaired by Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Olaolu Akindolire, with other members including Dr. Wunmi Ilawole, Olaleye Phillips, Mr. Asonja Festus, and Abiodun Ogunduboye.
The committee's terms of reference are comprehensive, involving liaison with the polytechnic's management, staff unions, and relevant state agencies to audit payroll data, reconcile implementation gaps, and recommend a sustainable payment structure that aligns with both the new minimum wage and the institution's financial realities. This initiative aims to create a more transparent and efficient salary system, preventing future payment issues and fostering a stable working environment.
Government Commitment to Staff Welfare and Institutional Stability
In response to this development, Commissioner for Education, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, emphasised that resolving the salary issues is crucial for stabilising the institution and restoring confidence among academic and non-academic staff. He reiterated the state government's unwavering commitment to ensuring that no worker is unfairly treated in the implementation of wage policies, highlighting the importance of fair compensation in maintaining morale and productivity within the polytechnic.
Additionally, Governor Aiyedatiwa has confirmed the appointment of Dr. Simeon Adegun as the substantive rector of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic. Dr. Adegun had been serving in an acting capacity since October 2024, and this confirmation solidifies his leadership role, expected to contribute to the institution's ongoing efforts to address administrative and financial challenges. The combined actions of clearing salary arrears and establishing the wage review committee demonstrate a proactive approach by the Ondo State government to support higher education and workforce welfare in the region.
