Anambra Police Commissioner Lauds Oko Polytechnic's Peaceful Environment and Near-Eradication of Cult Activities

The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has publicly commended the Federal Polytechnic in Oko for maintaining an exceptionally peaceful campus atmosphere and achieving a near-total elimination of cultism and violent student conflicts. During a courtesy visit to the institution on Wednesday, April 1, the police chief praised the polytechnic's management for fostering security and harmonious relations between students and staff.

CP Orutugu Attributes Campus Calm to Rector's Effective Leadership

Commissioner Orutugu specifically highlighted the leadership of Rector Dr. Chioma Irene Awuzie as the primary factor behind the institution's tranquility. He noted that her humility, discipline, focus, and deep understanding of the polytechnic's internal dynamics have created an environment where disruptive activities are almost non-existent. "I am endeared to the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, because of the peace that is reigning supreme here," Orutugu stated. "It is difficult to see an institution of higher learning where students and management don't have rancor from time to time; but it is unheard of here."

The police commissioner further emphasized that cultism and antisocial behaviors among students have been dramatically reduced under Dr. Awuzie's administration. He credited this achievement to her zero-tolerance policy toward such activities and her proactive management approach. Orutugu also acknowledged that the polytechnic has produced numerous prominent national figures throughout its history, expressing his personal admiration for the institution.

Rector Welcomes Recognition and Pledges Continued Cooperation

In her response, Rector Dr. Chioma Awuzie welcomed the police commissioner's visit and expressed gratitude for his recognition of the polytechnic's efforts. She assured continued cooperation between the institution's management and the Anambra State Police Command to sustain the existing security and peaceful coexistence. Dr. Awuzie also commended CP Orutugu for his significant contributions to improving security across Anambra State since assuming office.

"Before you came to Anambra state, residents hardly slept with their eyes closed; but now, we can sleep with our eyes closed; kudos to you. You are doing a great job in Anambra state," the rector remarked, highlighting the broader security improvements under the commissioner's leadership.

Visit Conducted at Invitation of Polytechnic Students Association

The commissioner's visit to Federal Polytechnic Oko was conducted at the invitation of the National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS), who had invited him to grace one of their programs. CP Orutugu was accompanied to the rector's office by the Student Union Government president and several executive members, demonstrating the collaborative relationship between student leadership and law enforcement.

Senior management staff present during the visit included Deputy Rector of Administration Dr. Ferguson Ezeokafor, Registrar Akeem Ayoola, and Director of Academic Planning Dr. Kenneth Ezekwe. Their presence underscored the institutional commitment to maintaining the peaceful environment that has become characteristic of the polytechnic.

Context of Broader Security Improvements in Anambra State

Commissioner Orutugu noted that his security initiatives have yielded positive results across Anambra State, citing the peaceful conduct of the November 8, 2025 gubernatorial election and a tranquil 2025 Christmas season as evidence of improved law enforcement effectiveness. He expressed satisfaction that several other tertiary institutions in the state are also experiencing relative peace without significant security challenges.

The recognition of Federal Polytechnic Oko's achievements comes shortly after the institution implemented reforms to prevent academic exploitation, including banning lecturers from directly selling textbooks to students and requiring all such sales to go through the official campus bookshop. These measures, implemented by Rector Awuzie, demonstrate her comprehensive approach to maintaining institutional integrity and student welfare.
