OPay has expanded its N1.2 billion 10-year scholarship programme to 25 partner tertiary institutions following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Miva Open University. The company plans to extend the programme to 16 additional institutions by the end of 2026, bringing the total to 41. This move reinforces OPay's long-term commitment to Nigerian students, offering sustained financial support over a decade.
Expansion Through New Partnerships
The MoU with Miva Open University marks a significant step in the programme's growth. Miva, described as a technology-driven university, brings a flexible and technology-enabled approach to higher education. Its inclusion means more students can access scholarship opportunities while pursuing education through an alternative learning model. According to the announcement, this partnership signals that OPay is not reducing its efforts but rather aiming to reach more students and institutions in the coming years.
The OPay Scholars Programme encompasses the N1.2bn 10-year scholarship, the OPay National Innovation Challenge in partnership with Google and 3MTT, and OPay Futures. The expansion from 20 to 25 institutions demonstrates a steady trajectory, with the target of 41 institutions by the end of 2026. For thousands of young Nigerians and their families, these numbers represent real opportunities for educational advancement.
A Commitment Beyond a Cheque
Education support in Nigeria often involves one-off donations or short-term interventions. OPay's approach differs, with a commitment stretching across a decade. The N1.2bn scholarship programme is designed to provide sustained support to students over 10 years, offering a more reliable form of assistance for those pursuing higher education. This long-term structure aims to reduce the financial uncertainty that often forces students to pause their studies.
The recent partnership with Miva Open University further solidifies this commitment. By integrating Miva into the scholarship framework, OPay acknowledges the growing role of technology in education and the need for diverse learning models. The move also positions the programme to adapt to changing educational landscapes while maintaining its core objective of supporting Nigerian youth.
A Long-Term Bet on Nigeria
For OPay, investing in Nigerian students is ultimately an investment in Nigeria itself. The scholarship recipients are not just students but future professionals, entrepreneurs, innovators, teachers, engineers, technology experts, healthcare workers, and leaders. Their success is intertwined with the country's progress, making this initiative a strategic contribution to national development.
The broader implications are significant. Students who remain in school can concentrate on their studies without the constant worry of funding. Parents gain relief from financial pressure, and young Nigerians can continue pursuing their dreams. This commitment transcends a corporate announcement, representing a tangible investment in a shared future. As OPay expands its reach, the impact on education and workforce development in Nigeria is expected to grow, with more institutions and students benefiting from the programme by 2026.
