The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially reopened all 47 Federal Unity Colleges across the nation. These institutions were previously closed down due to severe security threats.
Closure Followed Wave of Abductions and Attacks
The decision to shut the schools was made in November 2025. This drastic action came as a direct response to a dangerous surge in mass kidnappings of students and violent assaults. The insecurity affected regions in the North West, North East, North Central, and spilled into some southern states, creating nationwide concern for child safety.
Official Reopening Announcement and Safety Assurances
The reopening was formally declared on Thursday, December 18. The announcement came via a statement from the Federal Ministry of Education. The statement was signed by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade.
The Ministry moved to reassure parents, guardians, and the public. It emphasized that the safety and welfare of students is the government's highest priority. This decision to resume academic activities was not taken lightly. It followed sustained engagement and consultations with security agencies nationwide to bolster protective measures around the schools.
