The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially reopened all 47 Federal Unity Colleges across the nation. These institutions were previously closed down due to severe security threats.
Closure Followed Wave of Abductions and Attacks
The decision to shut the schools was made in November 2025. This drastic action came as a direct response to a dangerous surge in mass kidnappings of students and violent assaults. The insecurity affected regions in the North West, North East, North Central, and spilled into some southern states, creating nationwide concern for child safety.
Official Reopening Announcement and Safety Assurances
The reopening was formally declared on Thursday, December 18. The announcement came via a statement from the Federal Ministry of Education. The statement was signed by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade.
The Ministry moved to reassure parents, guardians, and the public. It emphasized that the safety and welfare of students is the government's highest priority. This decision to resume academic activities was not taken lightly. It followed sustained engagement and consultations with security agencies nationwide to bolster protective measures around the schools.
Ministry Commits to Uninterrupted Learning Agenda
The government's statement highlighted its determination to prevent prolonged disruption to education. It acknowledged the security challenges but stressed a commitment to continuity. "The Federal Government has reaffirmed its responsibility to protect every Nigerian child and to uphold their constitutional right to education in a secure setting," the release noted.
It further explained that the move reflects the administration's resolve to ensure no child is denied schooling due to security fears. The government positioned education as a central pillar of its human capital development agenda and a key driver for national growth.
"Accordingly, the government remains committed to safeguarding the academic calendar," the statement added. It pointed to the successful return of students and smooth examination conduct in several colleges as proof of this commitment.
The Ministry also expressed gratitude to all stakeholders. It thanked parents, school administrators, and students for their patience and cooperation during the difficult closure period. The government reiterated its unwavering resolve to maintain a secure and uninterrupted education system countrywide.
With many students concluding December academic programs or having finished examinations, the reopening aims to restore normalcy. This action ultimately reaffirms the government's pledge to ensure educational continuity while strengthening nationwide protection for students and staff.
