Ireland Issues New Study Visa Rules for Nigerian and International Students
Ireland New Visa Guidelines for Nigerian Students 2026

Ireland has implemented new visa requirements for international students from non-European Economic Area (EEA) countries, including Nigeria. The updated guidelines mandate that students intending to study in Ireland for more than 90 days must obtain a long-term study visa before traveling.

New Visa Requirements for Non-EEA Nationals

The Immigration Service Delivery of Ireland announced that non-EEA nationals must submit their visa applications from their home country or a country where they legally reside. Applications can be submitted up to three months before the intended travel date. The application process begins with an online form through Ireland's Automated Visa Application and Tracking System (AVATS).

Applicants are required to print, sign, and date the summary form, pay the necessary visa fee, and provide supporting documents. Required documents include a valid passport, passport-sized photographs, proof of private medical insurance, and an application letter. A letter of acceptance from the educational institution is mandatory, along with evidence of tuition fee payment, academic qualifications, and language proficiency if necessary. Students must also demonstrate sufficient funds to support their stay in Ireland.

Consequences of False Information

The immigration authority warned that providing false or misleading information could lead to a visa refusal and a potential five-year ban on obtaining an Irish visa. Applicants must disclose any previous visa refusals. Incomplete applications may also face rejection.

Students under 18 years old may need additional documents, including parental consent and accommodation arrangements. Applications are processed in the order they are received.

Travel and Entry Advice

Officials advised students not to make travel arrangements until their visa application has been approved. A valid visa does not automatically guarantee entry into Ireland. Upon arrival, students must satisfy immigration officials that they meet all entry requirements.

Extensions of permission to remain in Ireland are granted only in rare and exceptional circumstances. Such requests must be made before existing permission expires.
