The UK government has officially released its 2026 student visa processing timelines, confirming that waiting periods depend on the applicant's location at the time of submission. The updated guidance, published on the official UK student visa page, outlines clear deadlines for prospective international students, including those from Nigeria.
Processing Times: Three Weeks for Overseas Applicants
Applicants applying from outside the United Kingdom can expect a decision within three weeks. This applies to the majority of Nigerian students who submit their applications from Nigeria. Those already living in the UK, however, face a longer wait of up to eight weeks before receiving an outcome.
Application Windows and Key Deadlines
The guidance also specifies the earliest dates applicants can submit their student visa forms before a course begins. Students applying from abroad may start the process up to six months before their course start date. For those already in the UK, the application window opens three months before the course begins.
Applicants inside the UK must ensure they submit their application before their current visa expires. Additionally, the new course must begin within 28 days of the current visa's expiry date, leaving a tight window to avoid gaps in immigration status.
Eligibility and Additional Services
The student visa is available to applicants aged 16 and over who have secured a place at a licensed student sponsor, can demonstrate sufficient funds for tuition and living costs, and meet the required English language standard. Applicants aged 16 or 17 must also provide parental consent. Those under 18 attending an independent school may qualify for a Child Student visa instead.
For applicants needing faster decisions, the UK government noted that a priority service may be available. Eligibility for this paid service is indicated during the online application process. Successful applicants will receive their immigration status via an eVisa, which replaces the earlier Tier 4 (General) student visa system.
