Students on full-time courses below degree level, also sponsored by a compliant higher education provider, face a stricter cap of 10 hours per week during term-time. Similar to degree-level students, they are allowed to work full-time during official holiday periods. However, students in all other categories, including those enrolled in any part-time study arrangement, are completely barred from taking up any form of paid employment, regardless of the number of hours.
These distinctions aim to balance academic commitments with employment opportunities, ensuring that students can support themselves financially without compromising their studies. The rules apply uniformly across all UK nations, including England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
Work Placements and Special Exceptions
The regulations also include provisions for work placements that form an assessed, integral part of a student's course, provided the placement meets the requirements set out in the UK's immigration rules. A separate exception exists for students elected to the position of Student Union Sabbatical Officer or a National Union of Students position. Such students may work in that capacity for up to two years, but only if their Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies was specifically assigned for that purpose.
