Tragedy Strikes as NUT Staff Slumps and Dies on Way to Work in FCT
In a heartbreaking incident, Jessey A. Audu, a staff member of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), has slumped and died on his way to work. The tragic event occurred on Tuesday, April 21, at Gwahaon in the Gwagalada Area Council, sending shockwaves through the local community and the educational sector.
Details of the Incident
According to Ibrahim Adamu, a colleague of the deceased, Jessey left his home in Unguwar Dodo, Gwagwalada Area Council, around 7:12 am, appearing hale and hearty. However, he suddenly slumped and fell into a drainage near an Army checkpoint in the area. Passersby who saw him lying inside the drainage raised the alarm, prompting immediate action.
The police, assisted by some bystanders, identified Jessey and quickly contacted NUT staff members. They rushed to the scene and evacuated him to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital in Gwagwalada. Unfortunately, doctors at the hospital later confirmed his death, and his remains were deposited at the hospital's morgue.
Background of the Deceased
Jessey A. Audu was a cleaner with the FCT NUT state office, originally from the Yelwa community in Toto Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. He was married with children and had been in good health prior to the incident. Colleagues reported that he was at work on Monday, cleaning offices and surroundings until around 4:00 pm before closing and returning home, looking fit and well.
Chris, a staff member who spoke to the publication, said, "In fact, we were together on Monday, after he cleaned up everywhere until around 4:00 pm after closing work and left home. And he was looking hale and hearty."
Official Confirmation and Reactions
The Chairman of the FCT wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Comrade Mohammed Abdullahi Shafas, confirmed the death to reporters on Tuesday. He stated, "I just returned from the morgue where we deposited the remains of Jessey." A police source at the Gwagwalada division also verified the incident, adding to the official accounts.
This sudden loss has left the NUT community and Jessey's family in mourning, highlighting the unpredictable nature of such tragedies in everyday life. The incident underscores the importance of health awareness and emergency response in public spaces.
