The Nigeria Union of Teachers has issued a stern warning about a potential nationwide strike in response to the escalating attacks on educational institutions by terrorists and bandits across northern Nigeria.
Union Leaders Express Outrage Over Brutal Attacks
During a press conference held in Abuja on Tuesday, Comrade Audu Titus Amba, the National President of NUT, conveyed the profound anger and concern of the union's National Executive Council and all members. The union leadership specifically condemned the horrific incidents that have recently targeted schools in Kebbi and Niger States.
The brutal killing of a Vice Principal and a security guard at Government Girls Comprehensive School in Maga, Kebbi State, has sent shockwaves through the educational community. In the same attack, 25 students were abducted from the school, adding to the growing number of children being taken from their classrooms.
Mass Abductions in Niger State
The crisis extends beyond Kebbi State, with Niger State experiencing one of the largest school abductions in recent memory. Armed groups stormed St. Mary's Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools in Papiri, located in Agwara Local Government Area, and seized over 300 pupils and 12 staff members.
Comrade Amba described these coordinated assaults as barbaric and completely unacceptable, emphasizing that classrooms should serve as sanctuaries for learning and development. He stressed that the destruction of these educational environments threatens not only individual children but the entire nation's future.
Imminent Strike Action if Security Fails
The union leader delivered a powerful ultimatum to federal and state authorities, demanding immediate action to rescue all abducted students and staff while strengthening security around schools, particularly in vulnerable regions.
Teachers and learners have become an endangered species, Amba declared, highlighting the alarming frequency of attacks and kidnappings that often result in tragic deaths. He made it clear that if this dangerous trend continues unchecked, the NUT will have no choice but to call on all teachers nationwide to down tools and remain at home until their safety and security can be guaranteed.
The union specifically criticized the government's failure to implement the Safe Schools Declaration and related protective policies, noting that recent attacks have already forced some schools to close indefinitely, thereby mortgaging the future of Nigeria's children.
