Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in Zaria has been granted the provisional hosting rights for a major national sporting event, setting the stage for a significant gathering of Nigeria's student-athletes.
Official Award and Conditions
The university received formal notification of its successful bid to host the 29th Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) games, scheduled for the year 2028. The communication was delivered in a letter dated December 3, 2025, from the Acting Secretary-General of NUGA, Yunusa Bazza, acting on behalf of the NUGA Council.
The letter outlined that the final hosting rights are contingent upon the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA). It also granted ABU the authority to begin necessary upgrades to its facilities and to start forming partnerships with governmental and non-governmental bodies to ensure the event's success. The NUGA Council is expected to announce the specific dates for the games in the near future.
University Leadership's Vision and Excitement
Upon receiving the award letter, the Vice-Chancellor of ABU, Professor Adamu Ahmed, expressed profound joy and excitement. In a statement released by the University Director of Public Affairs, Mallam Awwalu Umar, the VC highlighted the significance of this opportunity.
Professor Ahmed noted that this marks the first time ABU will host the prestigious biennial games since 2001. He framed the event as a powerful opportunity to build Nigeria's economy around the sports value chain, aligning with national policies for developing the next generation of athletes through universities.
"The games would not only be for students to enjoy but also for the nation, despite the difficult challenges," he stated, emphasizing the broader national benefit.
ABU's Sporting Legacy and Future Commitment
The Vice-Chancellor pointed to ABU's designation as one of Nigeria's sports centres of excellence as perfect timing for this development. He commended the NUGA Council for its trust and assured that the university would justify the confidence placed in it.
Professor Ahmed proudly cited ABU's long tradition in sports, which has produced some of Nigeria's finest athletes, coaches, and sports administrators. He reiterated the university's belief in sports as a unifying force, a tool for youth development, and a vehicle for building character.
Recognizing sports as a multi-billion-dollar global industry beyond mere leisure, Professor Ahmed pledged ABU's commitment to a strong working relationship with NUGA before, during, and after the 2028 games, promising a successful and memorable event.
