A Legacy of Transformation: Prof. Adebayo's Tenure Concludes
The academic community at Ajayi Crowther University (ACU) in Oyo has officially celebrated the conclusion of Prof. Timothy Abiodun Adebayo's five-year tenure as Vice Chancellor through a colourful valedictory service held on 10 November 2025. The event, described by many as both emotional and celebratory, marked the end of what numerous stakeholders have called a highly transformative and impactful leadership period.
Substantial Infrastructure and Administrative Achievements
During the service, the Archbishop of Ibadan Province, Most Reverend Dr Williams Aladekugbe, delivered a powerful sermon titled "Thanksgiving Unto God," where he emphatically stated that Prof. Adebayo's appointment five years earlier was divinely orchestrated and certainly not a mistake. The Archbishop highlighted numerous physical projects completed under Adebayo's administration that will form his lasting legacy.
Key infrastructure developments included the construction of lodges for both the bursar and registrar on campus, a University Welcome Centre, an Engineering building, ACU's bakery, and the establishment of a Teaching and Research Farm. Significant upgrades were also made to existing facilities including the Water's factory, Wole Olanipekun's Lecture Theatre, cafeteria, Civil Engineering building, and Radiography building.
Beyond physical structures, Rev'd Aladekugbe noted that many staff members received timely promotions during Adebayo's tenure, describing the outgoing VC as a God-sent leader whom posterity would never forget. The congregation repeatedly interrupted the sermon with spontaneous applause, reflecting the widespread appreciation for Adebayo's accomplishments.
Leadership Philosophy and Personal Attributes
Prof. Adebayo, who previously served as a professor of Entomology and Pesticide Toxicology, demonstrated throughout his tenure that true leadership transcends individual achievements. According to Sunday Saanu, who worked as Adebayo's Media Assistant during a one-year sabbatical, the VC exemplified ethical and empathetic leadership that focused on empowering others.
Saanu described Adebayo as possessing extraordinary managerial skills and maintaining remarkable composure even during challenging situations. "He is a meek and enduring humble spirit that sails safe through storm," Saanu noted, adding that the VC's response to troubling issues consistently had a calming effect on the university community.
Adebayo's leadership style balanced firmness with compassion, particularly in student management. While playing a fatherly role, he also positioned himself as a friend to students, often giving them his personal money while maintaining disciplinary standards that included expelling recalcitrant students when necessary.
The valedictory service attracted numerous well-wishers including Adebayo's family members, friends, church members, school mates, and professional associates, many of whom presented gifts in appreciation of his exemplary performance. The event was organized not merely as a celebration but as profound gratitude to God for His grace over Adebayo's life and the achievements recorded during his tenure.
Prof. Adebayo has now handed over leadership to Prof. Ebunoluwa Olufemi Oduwole, who becomes the institution's first female Vice Chancellor. As he departs, Adebayo leaves behind a sterling record of accountability, probity, and forthrightness that has set a high standard for future leadership at Ajayi Crowther University.
