Governor Aiyedatiwa Stresses Importance of Tech-Driven Leadership in Universities
Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has called on universities to prioritize the development of future leaders who are not only equipped with traditional leadership skills but also adept at navigating technological disruptions, particularly in the era of artificial intelligence. Speaking at the Foundation Day lecture of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), on Thursday, Aiyedatiwa underscored that Nigeria's economic and technological progress hinges significantly on the quality of leadership and the robustness of its educational institutions.
Technology as a Catalyst for Leadership
In his lecture titled 'Leadership and Organisational Performance: Technology as a Driver', Governor Aiyedatiwa highlighted that while technology may evolve the tools used by societies, leadership remains the pivotal force in determining societal direction. He addressed concerns about artificial intelligence potentially replacing leaders, asserting that effective leadership still requires wisdom, judgment, and emotional intelligence to function properly. "Leadership remains one of the most important determinants of organisational success," Aiyedatiwa stated, emphasizing its role in shaping vision, mobilizing resources, and achieving strategic outcomes.
Universities' Central Role in Shaping Future Leaders
The governor maintained that universities must play a central role in cultivating a new generation of leaders capable of responding to global disruptions and emerging challenges. He praised FUTA for its reputation in producing resilient and competitive graduates, urging such institutions to focus on molding individuals who can contribute meaningfully to national development. "Institutions such as the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) occupy a strategic position in preparing the next generation of leaders who are knowledgeable, technologically capable and globally competitive," he said, adding that their responsibility extends beyond certification to influencing societal direction.
FUTA's Contributions and Government Support
On her part, FUTA Vice-Chancellor Prof. Adenike Oladiji described the institution as a dynamic academic environment that integrates technology with humanities to meet societal needs. She noted that technology has become essential in the digital age, serving as a vital tool for leaders. Oladiji also commended the Ondo State Government for its interventions at FUTA, including the conversion of the Ondo State Specialist Hospital to a teaching hospital, water projects, and road infrastructure improvements on campus. She emphasized that universities are repositories of knowledge, with engagement between scholars and practitioners strengthening intellectual growth.
Governor Aiyedatiwa concluded by stressing that the future will belong to societies that cultivate leaders who understand both people and technology, reinforcing the critical need for educational institutions to adapt and innovate in their leadership training programs.
