Delta Government Evacuates 34 Students from University of Jos Amid Plateau Violence

The Delta State Government has successfully evacuated no fewer than 34 students of Delta origin from the University of Jos, following a surge in violence and killings in Plateau State. This proactive safety measure was implemented after university authorities suspended academic activities due to the escalating insecurity in the region.

Swift Intervention and Coordination

During a reception for the returning students, the State Director of Protocol, Chief Sunday Onoriode, praised the rapid intervention authorized by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori. He highlighted that the evacuation operation was efficiently coordinated by the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Students Affairs, Comrade Ezekiel Okoh.

Onoriode emphasized that the decision to evacuate became imperative as the security situation deteriorated and the institution closed. He expressed relief that all affected students returned safely, describing the action as a testament to responsive governance and strong coordination.

"It is an unusual time for Nigeria, especially in that part of the country, but we believe that with God, peace will be restored. When the time comes for you to return to school, you will go back and complete your studies successfully," he stated.

He also encouraged the students to use the Easter period to rest, assuring them of the government's ongoing support and commitment to their welfare.

Evacuation Process and Challenges

Earlier, Comrade Ezekiel Okoh revealed that the evacuation followed a directive issued after the university announced a temporary shutdown due to security concerns. He explained that the state government worked closely with key stakeholders and transport operators to ensure the safe movement of the students.

According to Okoh, the immediate priority was to secure the students' safety before organizing their return home.

A student representative and Vice President of the National Association of Delta State Students (NADESSTU), University of Jos chapter, Comrade Newton Miracle, described the evacuation as both challenging and timely.

"It wasn't easy moving students under curfew conditions, but we are grateful to the governor for prioritising our safety. This shows leadership that listens and acts," he said.

This evacuation underscores the Delta State Government's commitment to protecting its citizens during crises, reflecting broader concerns about security in Nigeria's educational institutions.
