David Umahi University Forges New Path in Research Collaboration
The David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences (DUFUHS) in Uburu has positioned itself at the forefront of academic innovation in Nigeria by hosting a landmark one-day summit focused on strengthening research ties among tertiary institutions. The event, which took place yesterday at Re-Meritona Hotel in Abakaliki, gathered vice-chancellors, provosts, deans, and directors of research from across Ebonyi State to address critical gaps between academic research and government policy.
Building Bridges for Academic Excellence
In his opening address, Professor Jesse Uneke, Vice Chancellor of DUFUHS, emphasized that the summit was designed to create a sustainable framework for collaboration among universities in the state. "This summit is about building bridges and helping one another grow," Prof. Uneke stated. "No university can thrive in isolation. By working together, we can access research funding that individual efforts cannot secure and generate evidence that directly informs policy."
The university leader disclosed that this gathering would become an annual event, with plans to expand participation to include private universities in future editions. He expressed confidence that such collaboration would significantly benefit Nigeria's educational system.

The summit featured notable scholars and policymakers who provided expert perspectives on research development. Among the distinguished participants were:
- Prof. Chinedum Nwajiuba, former Vice Chancellor of Alex Ekwueme Federal University
- Prof. Akanerem I. Essien, former Vice Chancellor of the University of Uyo
- Dr. Kamil Shoretire, Director of Health Research, Planning and Statistics at the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Development
These experts unanimously stressed the importance of universities leveraging opportunities provided by TETFund's National Research Fund and effectively translating research outputs into actionable government policies that address real-world challenges.
Widespread Endorsement from Educational Leaders
Goodwill messages poured in from vice-chancellors of other Ebonyi institutions, including Ebonyi State University (EBSU), University of Science and Technology Oferekpe, and Aeronautics and Aerospace University Ezza. Professors Michael Awoke, Ernest Egba, and Patrick Nwofe collectively praised Prof. Uneke's foresight, describing the initiative as "a new dawn for research cooperation and academic excellence in Ebonyi."
Further support came from Prof. Amari Omaka (SAN), Ebonyi State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, and Prof. Nwogo Obasi, who represented the Secretary to the State Government. Both reaffirmed the Nwifuru administration's commitment to strengthening tertiary education under the People's Charter of Needs policy.
In his vote of thanks, Mr. Vitalis Ofor, Registrar of DUFUHS, described the summit as "enriching, impactful, and transformative," noting the enthusiastic participation from all attendees. "This summit has shown that collaboration is not just possible, but it is necessary for our progress," Ofor concluded.
Participants resolved to pursue joint research projects, deepen institutional partnerships, and align university research with policies that drive socio-economic development in Ebonyi and beyond, marking a significant step forward for Nigeria's academic landscape.
