Former Buhari Chief of Staff Gambari Assumes Academic Position at US University
Ibrahim Gambari, the former Chief of Staff to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, has officially started his tenure as a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, United States. This appointment, which runs from January to August 2026, marks a significant transition for the veteran diplomat into an academic setting.
Gambari's Memoir Project and Academic Engagement
In an online interview with journalists, Gambari disclosed that he has begun work on his memoir as part of his academic activities at the institution. He emphasized that this project involves documenting his decades of experience in diplomacy, governance, and international relations, drawing from a career that spans academia, multilateral diplomacy, and high-level public service in Nigeria and globally.
The appointment was approved by the University of Pennsylvania's School of Arts and Sciences, with Gambari being received upon arrival by Wale Adebanwi, the departmental head in the Graduate School. As a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at the Center for Africana Studies, Gambari is expected to contribute to scholarly discourse and advance personal research projects, including his memoir.
Background and Significance of the Appointment
Gambari, who also served as a former United Nations Under-Secretary-General, brings a wealth of expertise to the university. His role is anticipated to enrich academic discussions and provide insights into global governance and diplomatic practices. The move highlights a growing trend of Nigerian public figures engaging in international academic institutions post-government service.
This development follows other notable appointments involving Nigerian leaders, such as former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo's recent role as a Senior Strategic Advisor at Africa CDC, aimed at enhancing health security on the continent. Such appointments often spark public debate and mixed reactions, underscoring the ongoing interest in the qualifications and contributions of former officials.
Gambari's academic tenure is set to conclude in August 2026, during which he will focus on completing his memoir and participating in university activities. This engagement underscores the intersection of public service and academia, offering a platform for sharing knowledge and experiences with a broader audience.
