In a significant move to honour a leading African figure, The University of The Gambia has renamed a key faculty after a former head of the African Development Bank.
A Legacy Honoured in Gambia
The University of The Gambia officially renamed its School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences after Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, the immediate past President of the African Development Bank (AfDB). The ceremony, which took place on 3 January 2026, was led by Gambian President Adama Barrow, who praised Adesina's transformative work for the continent.
President Barrow highlighted Adesina's visionary leadership from 2015 to 2025, during which he spearheaded the AfDB's "High 5" programme. A central pillar of this was the "Feed Africa" strategy, an initiative credited with impacting over 535 million people across the continent by boosting food security and stimulating economic growth.
Celebrating Transformative Leadership
The Gambian leader detailed Adesina's concrete achievements. Beyond the Feed Africa strategy, Barrow noted that under Adesina's stewardship, the capital base of the AfDB grew significantly. He also lauded the former bank president for his crucial role in financing the construction of the historic bridge connecting The Gambia and Senegal, a project that has enhanced regional trade and integration.
The university's management explained their decision, stating it was to recognise Adesina's relentless advocacy for several key areas crucial to Africa's future. They specifically mentioned:
- Agriculture-led development
- Empowerment of the youth
- Building climate resilience
Inspiring the Next Generation
In a statement, the university expressed its deep appreciation for Adesina's career, which began with pioneering reforms as Nigeria's Minister of Agriculture. "Your tireless advocacy for leveraging agriculture as a catalyst for industrialisation, job creation, and youth empowerment continues to inspire policies across the continent," the statement read.
"By naming our School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences in your honour, we seek to immortalise your legacy and inspire our students to emulate your vision, determination and passion for Africa’s development," the university added. They described the renaming as a reflection of their belief in the transformative power of African talent.
In his response, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina expressed profound gratitude to President Barrow and the university community for what he termed an "exceptional honour." The renaming permanently links his name and legacy to the education of future leaders in agriculture and environmental science in The Gambia.
