Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has praised the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) for its increased interventions in Nigeria's higher education sector, particularly at Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK). Speaking at the unveiling of the Mine Tech University Innovation Pod at NSUK, Governor Sule highlighted the remarkable transformation under TETFund's leadership, led by Executive Secretary Arc. Sonny Echono.
Governor Sule's Remarks
Governor Sule noted that the development witnessed at NSUK in the past six years under Echono's leadership surpassed what had been achieved in the previous 24 years of the university's existence. He stated: "In the last six years, the amount of development this Nasarawa State University has seen from TETFund surpassed that witnessed in the past 24 years of the university. This is the reason we must continue to thank you for the wonderful support you have given to us and to this university."
The governor's words underscored the broader impact of TETFund across Nigeria's tertiary education system. From physical infrastructure to research support, innovation hubs, academic staff development, digital learning facilities, and entrepreneurship initiatives, TETFund has become a backbone for public tertiary education funding.
Mine Tech University Innovation Pod
The Mine Tech UniPod, supported by TETFund and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), represents a shift toward innovation and technology-driven research. The facility aims to foster digital creativity, mining technology research, start-up incubation, and practical enterprise development. For a university in a state rich in solid mineral deposits, the project bridges academic learning with industry application, positioning students to contribute to Nigeria's economic diversification.
Governor Sule announced that the state government would provide a solar mini grid to ensure sustainable power supply for the facility, recognizing that constant electricity is critical for digital learning, technological research, and enterprise incubation.
Alignment with National Priorities
The project demonstrates TETFund's alignment with national development priorities under Echono's leadership. The agency has emphasized innovation, research commercialization, digital transformation, and employability, moving beyond traditional infrastructure projects toward future-oriented interventions. Stakeholders, including Vice Chancellor Prof. Hassan Liman, commended TETFund's consistent support, which has improved both infrastructure and academic capacity.
UNDP representative Elsie Attafuah also endorsed the initiative, highlighting international recognition of TETFund's role in strengthening innovation and human capital development. Partnerships with development organizations reflect confidence in TETFund's ability to deliver impactful projects.
Broader Impact of TETFund
TETFund currently serves over 280 beneficiary institutions, including federal and state universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. Its projects dominate the physical and academic landscape, from modern lecture theatres and laboratories to libraries, hostels, and innovation centers. Thousands of lecturers have benefited from local and international training, improving research output and teaching quality. The agency has also invested heavily in ICT infrastructure, addressing weaknesses exposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The current phase of intervention emphasizes sustainability and innovation, with increasing numbers of innovation hubs, entrepreneurship centers, and research commercialization initiatives across campuses. Governor Sule's remarks reflect a national reality where TETFund has become a reliable engine of educational development, and stakeholders place confidence in Echono's leadership, which continues to push for transparency and alignment with global trends.
