University Management Distances Itself from Tragic Incident Involving Student
The Management of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai (IBBUL), has issued a firm statement distancing the institution from the alleged rent dispute that led to the tragic death of a 300-level Computer Science student, Kelvin Danlami. According to reports, Danlami allegedly committed suicide after losing N600,000 through betting activities, with his body discovered hanging from the ceiling of his room by a neighbor who alerted authorities.
Clarification on University's Non-Involvement
In a press statement signed by the Deputy Registrar, Information, Alhaji Baba Akote, the university emphasized that it was neither aware of nor involved in any financial or rental transaction between the deceased student and the landlord mentioned in various reports. The management noted with concern the circulation of this story on social media and online platforms, clarifying that the alleged incident stemmed from a private arrangement entirely outside the academic and administrative operations of IBBUL.
"The University wishes to state clearly that it is not aware of, and was not a party to any financial or rental transaction between the deceased student and the landlord in question," the statement read. It further explained that the matter relates to a private arrangement that falls completely outside the institution's purview.
Commitment to Transparent Investigation
While extending its condolences, the university management assured the public of its full cooperation with relevant authorities to ensure a proper and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Danlami's mysterious death. The statement cautioned against speculation and the spread of unverified information, which could further traumatize the family, friends, and the university community.
"While awaiting the outcome of a thorough investigation by the relevant security agencies, the University Management cautions against speculation and the spread of unverified information that may further traumatize the family, friends, and the University community," the statement emphasized.
Advice to Students and Police Confirmation
The management used the opportunity to remind all students that their primary purpose at IBBUL is to pursue academic programs with diligence and discipline. Students were strongly advised to avoid involvement in questionable transactions or activities that could expose them to financial, legal, or psychological distress.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the Niger State Police Command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident to Daily Trust. He stated that on January 19, 2026, at about 10:30 AM, information was received indicating that in the early hours of the day, Kelvin Danlami, a student of IBBUL, was found to have hanged himself in his room with a cloth tied to the ceiling fan.
"One of the student neighbors who discovered the situation raised an alarm, and the victim was rushed to General Hospital Lapai, where he was confirmed dead," the PPRO said. He added that police operatives attached to Lapai Division visited the scene, conducted a preliminary investigation, and contacted the family of the deceased, with further investigation ongoing to ascertain the reason for such action.
The university's statement underscores its commitment to maintaining a safe and focused academic environment while supporting efforts to uncover the truth behind this distressing event.
