The Lagos State University of Science and Technology, commonly known as LASUSTECH, is set to mark its Fourth Founder's Day on Monday, February 2, 2026. This significant event will take place at the College of Agriculture Main Auditorium located on the Ikorodu Campus, bringing together the academic community and stakeholders to celebrate the institution's journey and chart a course for its continued advancement.
Annual Celebration with a Visionary Theme
This yearly occasion serves as a pivotal moment for reflection on the university's accomplishments since its inception and for strategizing its future trajectory. The celebration is themed 'Mapping the Future,' underscoring LASUSTECH's unwavering dedication to fostering academic excellence, driving innovation, and contributing to national development. The day's agenda promises to be engaging and informative, designed to inspire and mobilize the university community.
Highlight: Founder's Day Lecture by Esteemed Academic
A key feature of the Founder's Day festivities is the Founder's Day Lecture, which will be delivered by Professor Adenike Temidayo Oladiji, the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA). Her address, titled 'Achieving the Objectives of Universities of Science and Technology,' is expected to provide valuable insights into the role and aspirations of science and technology institutions in Nigeria's educational landscape. This lecture aims to stimulate thought and discussion among attendees.
Engaging Activities and Community Building
Beyond the lecture, the programme will include interactive sessions that encourage dialogue and collaboration, activities celebrating the university's progress over the years, and tours of its expanding infrastructure. These elements are integral to LASUSTECH's efforts to cultivate a robust academic community and enhance its contribution to national growth. The event is organized to foster a sense of pride and shared purpose among students, faculty, and partners.
Historical Background and Institutional Evolution
LASUSTECH was formally established in 2022 following the transformation of Lagos State Polytechnic into a full-fledged university. This strategic move was initiated and signed into law by Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, as part of his administration's vision to broaden access to higher education in science, technology, and innovation. The transformation aims to position Lagos as a central hub for technical manpower and cutting-edge research, aligning with broader economic goals.
Leadership and Academic Expansion
At its inception, Professor Olumuyiwa Odusanya was appointed as the pioneer Vice Chancellor to lead the institution. Under his guidance, LASUSTECH began with 37 approved academic programmes distributed across five colleges: Agriculture, Engineering Technology, Environmental Design and Technology, Basic Sciences, and Applied Social Sciences. Since then, the university has experienced steady growth, now offering 42 accredited programmes, reflecting its rapid development and commitment to delivering quality education in science and technology fields.
Accreditation and Student Admission
The university received its Certificate of Operating Licence from the National Universities Commission (NUC) on February 8, 2022, and admitted its first cohort of students in the 2022/2023 academic session. Since that milestone, LASUSTECH has continued to strengthen both its academic offerings and physical infrastructure, ensuring a conducive learning environment for its growing student body.
Insights from University Officials
According to Lanre Kuye, the Director of Information and Public Relations at LASUSTECH, the Founder's Day Celebration serves as a vital platform for the university community and stakeholders to engage with the institution's vision and achievements. He emphasized that the event highlights LASUSTECH's crucial role in producing skilled graduates who are equipped to contribute meaningfully to national development, thereby reinforcing the university's impact beyond academia.
