Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN), Kano, has reaffirmed its commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and character development as 1,056 newly admitted students took their matriculation oath for the 2025/2026 academic session. The university made this commitment during its fifth matriculation ceremony since its establishment in 2022, held at the Professor Abubakar Adamu Rasheed Twin Lecture Theatre in Kano.
President's Address
Speaking at the event, President of MAAUN, Prof. Mohammad Israr, described the ceremony as a significant milestone marking the students' formal admission into a university community built on excellence, integrity, and service. He congratulated the new students on their admission and urged them to take advantage of the opportunities available at the institution to excel academically and contribute meaningfully to society. Prof. Israr noted that MAAUN has continued to strengthen its reputation within Nigeria's higher education sector, adding that the institution was recently ranked as the second-best private university in the country by the AD Scientific Index.
Strategic Investments and International Collaborations
According to him, the university has expanded its academic and research profile through strategic investments in teaching, innovation, and international collaborations. He disclosed that MAAUN has signed over 70 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with universities and organizations across 31 countries, including the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, France, Russia, China, Brazil, India, and Afghanistan. The university president further revealed that MAAUN currently has a student population of more than 5,000, with female students accounting for about 80% of enrolment, reflecting the institution's commitment to promoting access to education and empowering women.
Founder's Advice to Students
In his remarks, Founder of the MAAUN Group of Universities, Prof. Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, advised the students to remain focused on their studies and avoid activities that could undermine their academic aspirations. He warned against drug abuse and other social vices, stressing that the university maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards misconduct and indiscipline. Prof. Gwarzo urged the students to uphold good character and adhere strictly to the institution's rules and regulations throughout their academic journey.

Also speaking, Vice President Administration of MAAUN Maradi, Niger Republic, Dr. Shu'aibu Tanko, encouraged the students to be worthy ambassadors of the university and Nigeria by demonstrating excellence, discipline, and leadership. Some parents who attended the ceremony commended the university management for its commitment to quality education and character development, while praising the institution's investment in world-class facilities for teaching, learning, and research.
Matriculation Oath and Dignitaries
The matriculation oath was administered by the Vice President Administration, Dr. Habib Awais Abubakar, officially inducting the students into the university community. Among dignitaries at the ceremony were the Dean, School of Postgraduate Studies, Prof. Ahmad Maigari Ibrahim; Director, Institute of Africa Higher Education Research and Innovation (IAHERI), Prof. Abubakar Sadiq Haruna; Director, Academic Planning and Quality Assurance, Dr. Nura A. Yaro; Vice President Campus Life, Dr. Hamza Garba; Head of MAAUN International Office, Engr. Bashir Garba, as well as deans, heads of departments, and other invited guests.
