Medical Graduate Recalls Spiritual Disturbance During Exam That Cost Him a Year
A Nigerian medical graduate, identified as Dr. Faroq, has shared a deeply personal and unsettling account of an experience during his medical school years that he believes directly contributed to academic failure and an additional year of study. The incident occurred during a critical 300-level resit examination and involved what he described as a spiritual disturbance that affected his performance.
The Late-Night Encounter
According to Dr. Faroq, the episode began while he was studying alone in a reading room around 3:30 a.m., preparing for the upcoming examination. He suddenly perceived what he characterized as a "spiritual personality" speaking directly to him. This presence, he claimed, told him that despite being well-prepared for the test, he should intentionally write incorrect answers.
The experience left him frozen with fear and unable to sleep, spending the remaining hours before the exam in prayer and attempting to calm his nerves before heading to the examination hall.
Examination Hall Turmoil
Dr. Faroq explained that when the first paper was distributed, he initially felt confident and knowledgeable about the material. However, an unsettling phenomenon began to unfold during the test.
"I was excited because I knew everything. But something strange started happening. I kept cancelling my correct answers. I doubted every single thing I wrote. I wasn't sure of what I was sure of anymore," he recounted.
His answer script became rough with repeated corrections as he second-guessed himself continuously. After completing the paper, he walked to the back of the hall and became emotional, realizing he had systematically eliminated all his correct responses.
Academic Consequences and Emotional Aftermath
When examination results were released, Dr. Faroq had failed the crucial test, resulting in an additional year of medical school. He described the period that followed as one of the most challenging seasons of his life, testing both his emotional resilience and spiritual faith.
Despite the significant setback, Dr. Faroq emphasized that he leaned more deeply into his faith rather than withdrawing from religious practices. "Even now, typing this brings tears to my eyes. But through it all, I never left God. I didn't stop going to church. In fact, I served even more in fellowship," he shared.
He noted that some colleagues advised him to focus exclusively on academics and discontinue church activities, but he chose to remain committed to his spiritual beliefs throughout the difficult period.
Broader Context of Academic Pressure
This personal account highlights the intense pressures faced by university students, particularly in demanding fields like medicine. Academic stress, sleep deprivation, and anxiety are recognized challenges that can significantly impact concentration, decision-making abilities, and confidence during examinations.
Experts note that such conditions sometimes cause students to second-guess correct answers, though Dr. Faroq's experience incorporates a spiritual dimension that made his situation particularly distinctive.
"That season tested me, stretched me, and tried to break me. But it did not destroy me. Today, it's history. Thank God," Dr. Faroq concluded, reflecting on how he ultimately overcame this difficult chapter in his academic journey.
