Kogi Police Arrest Man for Setting Wife on Fire

The Kogi State Police Command has arrested Jacob Irewa for allegedly setting his wife, Berida Irawo, on fire. The incident occurred on Friday, August 14, 2026, at Oworo Estate, Felele, Lokoja. The suspect was taken into custody on charges of attempted culpable homicide, according to the command's spokesperson, ASP Salisu Afusat.

Arrest and Preliminary Investigation

In a statement released on Sunday, ASP Afusat disclosed that the arrest followed a report received by the B Division Surveillance Team, Felele. At approximately 2030 hours on the day of the incident, the team mobilized to the scene and apprehended the suspect.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the attack stemmed from a domestic disagreement. The victim had burnt some of her husband's clothes without his permission, believing he no longer used them. This act angered the suspect, who then threatened her. He reportedly fetched petrol from his motorcycle and set her ablaze.

Victim Hospitalized, Suspect Admits Guilt

ASP Afusat confirmed that the victim survived the attack and is currently receiving medical treatment at Honey Gold Hospital, Felele. The suspect, in his statement to the police, admitted to setting his wife on fire. The command has initiated a comprehensive investigation to establish all circumstances surrounding the incident and gather further evidence.

Police Commissioner Condemns Violence

The Commissioner of Police for Kogi State, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, strongly condemned the act. He reiterated the command's zero tolerance for violence, particularly domestic violence. He urged the public to seek lawful means of resolving domestic disputes and to avoid actions that could endanger lives.

CP Kankarofi stated that the suspect would be charged to court for prosecution upon the conclusion of the investigation. ASP Afusat added, "The Kogi State Police Command remains committed to protecting lives and property and ensuring that persons responsible for violent crimes are brought to justice."
