Middlesex University Honors Ooni of Ife, Strengthens UK-Nigeria Innovation and Education Ties
In a significant ceremony at Middlesex University in London, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, was honored for his leadership and influence on culture, enterprise, and global dialogue. The event, held during the UK-Africa Trade Expo's "Time Cube" Dragon's Den session, underscored the deepening connections between Nigerian cultural institutions and the United Kingdom's entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Recognition and Keynote Address
During the ceremony, Prof. Shân Wareing, the Dean and Vice-Chancellor of Middlesex University, presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Olori Aderonke Ademiluyi-Ogunwusi, representing the Ooni and the Ile-Ife Kingdom. This recognition marked a milestone as the first time a reigning Ooni's leadership has been formally acknowledged within a university-based Dragon's Den framework.
Olori Aderonke delivered a keynote address, urging students to build with purpose, honor their roots, and "lift as they rise." She emphasized the importance of aligning tradition with forward-looking skills, reinforcing the relevance of heritage in shaping modern enterprise and policy conversations.
Dragon's Den-Style Pitch Session
The event featured a panel of judges in a Dragon's Den-style pitch session, where student-led ventures across sectors such as edtech and sustainable logistics were evaluated. Olori Aderonke joined the panel, which included HRH Prince Kamari Ademiluyi, International Economic Adviser to the palace and CEO of the UK-Africa Trade Expo; Erelu Olajumoke Adebola, the Erelu of the Source; Veritas Societas Chair, Limara Haque; and Edd Williams of GEC Space Interplanetary Bridge.
The panel offered critiques and pathways to funding and market access, turning dialogue into action. The "Time Cube" format, conceived by Professor George Dafoulas of Middlesex University, replaced conventional lectures with an immersive environment designed to integrate academic, royal, and industry perspectives.
Collaboration and Future Prospects
The honor laid the groundwork for potential collaboration between the Ile-Ife Kingdom, Ojaja University, and Middlesex University, particularly in innovation, cultural exchange, and education programs. Ooni Ogunwusi, who supported the initiative from its early stages, highlighted the importance of such partnerships.
Following the session, several student teams exchanged contacts with panelists, and university faculty reported a notable increase in mentorship requests within 24 hours. The palace delegation later toured Middlesex University's laboratories, signaling prospects for follow-on projects.
Organizers announced plans to make the event an annual fixture, positioning it as a bridge between Nigerian cultural institutions and the UK's entrepreneurial ecosystem. This initiative aims to foster ongoing dialogue and action in areas like edtech, sustainable logistics, and cultural leadership.
