New City University Urges Pioneer Students to Pursue Academic Excellence
New City University, located in Ayetoro, Ogun State, has issued a strong call to its 35 pioneer matriculating students to pursue academic excellence and strictly avoid examination malpractice. The university warned that it will enforce strict disciplinary actions to preserve its high academic and moral standards, emphasizing its commitment to fostering a culture of integrity and scholarly achievement.
Incentives for Top Performers
During the matriculation ceremony held on campus, the visitor and founder of the university, Hon. Akin Akingbesote, highlighted the institution's dedication to rewarding outstanding academic performance. He assured that students who graduate with a first-class CGPA or qualify as chartered accountants will have their tuition fees refunded as an incentive. Akingbesote stated that the university's vision is to compete with globally recognized institutions like Harvard University, and it is prepared to invest significantly in quality teaching and research to drive national growth and development.
Expansion Plans and Quality Education
Earlier in the event, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Prof. Ralph Akinfeleye, reassured students of receiving a quality education that will equip them to be relevant in national discourse. He noted that the university is deliberate in providing quality and enduring educational value. Akinfeleye revealed plans to expand the student population to approximately 6,000 and establish a Faculty of Law, along with programmes in Chemical Engineering, adding to the already five approved faculties. He explained that this expansion is designed to broaden access to tertiary education and produce graduates capable of competing on a global scale.
Commitment to Discipline and Innovation
Prof. Akinfeleye urged the pioneer students to demonstrate loyalty, discipline, and commitment to their studies to help advance the university's standing. He also commended government agencies and regulators for creating a conducive environment for the establishment of new universities, acknowledging the crucial support from the chancellor, vice-chancellor, and other stakeholders in laying the foundation for the university's successful take-off.

In his remarks, the acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Olagunju, emphasized that the establishment of New City University was driven by the need to complement existing universities and introduce innovative approaches to teaching, research, and community engagement. He urged students to remain focused on their academic pursuits and uphold the institution's core values of excellence, integrity, diligence, and responsibility, reinforcing the university's mission to contribute positively to society through education.
