Nigerian Doctor Celebrates UK Medical License After Overcoming Challenges
A Nigerian lady who completed her medical studies in Nigeria has achieved her dream of becoming a licensed doctor in the United Kingdom, sharing an inspiring journey marked by perseverance and dedication. Her story, documented on TikTok under the handle @lifewithmoneeka, highlights the rigorous processes and exams required to practice medicine abroad, resonating with many aspiring professionals.
Long Road to Qualification
She spent nine years in medical school in Nigeria, a period extended due to frequent Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strikes. Graduating in December 2019, her plans were further disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, which delayed her ability to secure a house job initially. Instead, she took on a medical officer position that paid 100,000 naira per month before finally starting her house job in 2020, which she completed in November 2021.
Her journey continued with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), counted as part of her Foundation Year 2 (FY2) experience. She then focused on international exams, writing the IELTS test three months later after studying during her house job. Upon receiving her IELTS results, she immediately booked the Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) 1 exam, a prerequisite for UK medical practice, but faced a year-long wait, securing a date in 2023 after booking in 2022.
Inspiring Reactions and Community Support
Her TikTok post garnered widespread attention and praise, with many users congratulating her and seeking advice for similar paths. Comments included messages of encouragement and inquiries about study resources for PLAB 2, reflecting the impact of her story on the diaspora community and medical aspirants.
