Nigerian Woman Faces Deportation Threat in Canada Over Document Mishap
A Nigerian woman has sparked widespread attention on social media after sharing a harrowing experience where she was almost deported immediately upon arriving in Canada. The incident, which unfolded at the airport, was triggered by her decision to store critical travel documents in her checked luggage, leading to significant concerns during immigration checks.
Viral TikTok Video Details Airport Ordeal
Identified as @jenny_ofca on TikTok, the woman posted a video recounting how avoidable errors nearly resulted in her being sent back to Nigeria. She explained that she traveled to Canada from Nigeria to pursue her studies, but packed excessively to maintain what she described as her "big girl lifestyle" from Lagos, despite warnings from her brother. "I had lots of clothes, shoes and bags. In my head, I was going to continue the same lifestyle I was living in Lagos," she stated in the video.
The trouble began when she placed all essential documents, including her Letter of Acceptance and visa approval letter, into her checked baggage during airport check-in. "Unknown to me, I was going to see the border services in Canada before taking my bags. So I felt, it's the bag first before going to the border services," she narrated. Upon arrival, immigration officials requested the documents for border clearance, but she could not produce physical copies as they were still in her luggage.
Suspicious Behavior and Immigration Scrutiny
Compounding the issue, her actions at the airport raised further suspicion. She admitted to delaying her approach to an assigned immigration officer, attempting to avoid a female official in hopes that a male officer might be more receptive to her explanation. This behavior reportedly heightened officials' concerns, leading to additional questioning. "Everything was cool, calm. Went through... um, Canada, got there, I was waiting for my bag, I didn't see my bag. They said I needed to see border services. That was where the issue started," she recounted.
Fortunately, after reviewing her responses and verifying her details through soft copies of the documents she provided, the immigration officer eventually permitted her entry into the country. "He told me, 'You can go.' I even had to ask again to be sure I heard him correctly," she said, expressing relief at the outcome.
Lessons Learned and Social Media Reactions
The TikTok user emphasized that the experience served as a major lesson about the importance of keeping travel documents accessible during international journeys. Her story has resonated widely, with viewers sharing supportive comments. One user, khngSmart, remarked, "Confidence is everything, and always staying positive no matter the situation." Another, W/Nozkid, noted, "Thank God it’s not US POE even if I know you’d still go through because you prayed but it would been harder fr."
This incident follows previous reports of similar travel mishaps involving Nigerians abroad, underscoring the challenges and risks associated with immigration processes. The woman's account highlights the critical need for travelers to adhere to document protocols to avoid such stressful situations.
