NYSC Imposes Sanctions on 24 Corps Members in Sokoto for Disciplinary Breaches
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has taken disciplinary action against 24 corps members deployed in Sokoto State for various infractions, including absenteeism and abscondment from duty. The sanctions were announced during the passing-out ceremony for the 2025 Batch A, Stream I corps members, highlighting the scheme's commitment to maintaining order and accountability.
Details of the Disciplinary Measures
Usman Yakubu Yaro, the NYSC State Coordinator in Sokoto, disclosed that eight corps members will be required to repeat their service year due to severe violations. Additionally, 16 others have had their service periods extended as a consequence of lesser infractions committed during their tenure. Yaro emphasized that the NYSC maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards truancy and indiscipline, warning that such behaviors undermine the objectives of the national service program.
Recognition of Outstanding Contributions
Despite the disciplinary actions, Yaro praised the majority of corps members for their dedication and positive impact. He specifically highlighted two individuals who received the prestigious Sultan Sa'ad Abubakar Award for their exceptional community development projects. This award, named after Sa'ad Abubakar, recognizes corps members who demonstrate exemplary service and contribute significantly to local communities, particularly in healthcare and education sectors.
Advice for Outgoing Corps Members
During the ceremony, Yaro offered guidance to the departing corps members, urging them to continue representing the NYSC as ambassadors of discipline and patriotism. He advised them to leverage the skills acquired during their service year, noting the increasing challenges in securing traditional employment opportunities. Furthermore, he cautioned against night travel for safety reasons, recommending that corps members seek shelter in secure locations such as NYSC lodges, security facilities, or traditional institutions when necessary.
Acknowledgments and Broader Impact
Yaro expressed gratitude to Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu for his consistent support, particularly in ensuring the timely payment of state allowances to corps members. He also thanked the Sultan of Sokoto for his ongoing advocacy and backing of youth-oriented initiatives. The coordinator underscored the vital role of corps members in rural development, where many, especially medical personnel, have helped address healthcare shortages, while others have enhanced educational outcomes through teaching assignments in local schools.
The passing-out ceremony served as a culmination of the service year, reinforcing the NYSC's core values of discipline, national service, and community engagement. The event underscored the importance of adherence to regulations while celebrating the achievements of corps members who have made meaningful contributions to society.
