NYSC Issues Strict Warning Against Night Travel as 2026 Batch 'A' Stream II Orientation Commences
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has issued a firm caution to prospective corps members, advising them to avoid night journeys as preparations for the 2026 Batch 'A' Stream II Orientation Course get underway. This warning comes amid heightened concerns for the safety of young graduates traveling to camps across Nigeria.
Orientation Schedule and Registration Details
In an official statement released by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, the NYSC management outlined that the 21-day orientation exercise will be conducted simultaneously in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. The orientation course is set to begin with the reception and registration of prospective corps members on Wednesday, 22nd April 2026, and will conclude at midnight on Friday, 24th April, 2026.
Embu further clarified, "Prospective Corps Members mobilized for the 2026 Batch 'A' Stream II service year will be sworn-in on Friday, 24th April, 2026. Meanwhile, the Orientation Course will come to an end on Tuesday, 12th May, 2026." This structured timeline aims to ensure a smooth and organized process for all participants.
Safety Measures and Travel Guidelines
The NYSC management extended its best wishes to all mobilized Nigerian graduates for safe travels to their respective orientation camps. However, they reiterated the critical warning against embarking on journeys after dark. Embu emphasized, "The prospective corps members are advised to break their journeys once it's 6.00pm, and pass the night at any available 'corps members' lodge, military formation, police station/outpost or palace of a traditional ruler anywhere in the country, then continue the following morning."
This advisory is part of broader efforts to enhance security and prevent incidents during travel, reflecting the NYSC's commitment to the welfare of corps members. The management encourages all participants to prioritize their safety by adhering to these guidelines strictly.
Context and Broader Implications
The travel warning follows recent incidents, such as the case of Ogun State NYSC official Abass Olalekan, who is in police custody over the death of corps member Victoria Ariyo in Abeokuta. Such events underscore the importance of vigilance and precautionary measures for young Nigerians undertaking national service.
As the 2026 Batch 'A' Stream II orientation approaches, the NYSC's proactive stance on safety highlights its role in safeguarding the lives of corps members. Prospective participants are urged to plan their travels carefully, avoid nighttime movements, and utilize designated safe havens to ensure a secure and successful service year.
