OAU Graduate Defies Odds with First-Class Degree After Academic Struggles
A graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has captured public attention by sharing his remarkable academic journey on social media, detailing how he overcame significant challenges to earn a first-class degree. Precious Adebisi Olujinmi, who graduated with honors in Demography and Social Statistics, revealed that his path to success was marked by numerous obstacles, including attending a total of eleven schools across his primary and secondary education.
From Multiple Schools to Academic Excellence
Olujinmi explained that he attended six different primary schools and five secondary schools over a span of more than six years, frequently moving between states in Nigeria. This instability made it difficult for him to establish a consistent academic foundation. Despite these disruptions, he persevered, ultimately gaining admission to OAU, one of Nigeria's most prestigious universities.
His academic struggles were further highlighted by his performance in national examinations. He received an E8 grade in the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and an F9 in the National Examinations Council (NECO) for mathematics. To meet university admission requirements, he had to retake the NECO General Certificate of Education (GCE) and combine his results. Olujinmi emphasized that he did not let these setbacks define him, instead using them as motivation to work harder.
Turning the Tide at University
Upon entering OAU, Olujinmi started with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.08 in his first year. Through determination and resilience, he significantly improved his academic performance. He achieved a perfect 5.0 GPA in his fourth year and maintained a minimum GPA of 4.64 after his initial year. This impressive turnaround was accomplished despite personal challenges, including his father's illness, which added to his difficulties.
In addition to his academic pursuits, Olujinmi balanced his studies with extracurricular activities, such as playing football at various levels throughout his university years. He attributed his success to a combination of hard work, prayer, and unwavering support from his parents, lecturers, family, and friends.
