Alumni and Medical Association Hail New Provost
The University of Uyo (UniUyo) community is celebrating the election of Professor Dianabasi Eduwem as the new Provost-elect for its College of Health Sciences. The announcement, made in early January 2026, has sparked a wave of congratulatory messages from his former classmates and professional medical bodies.
Congratulations from Classmates and Colleagues
The news was first shared with members of G-74, a group comprising Eduwem's classmates from Lutheran High School, Obot Idim, Uyo. The announcement was made by Professor Orua Antia, who was recently elected Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the same university. Antia posted the congratulatory note on the group's platform, which prompted immediate and enthusiastic responses.
Idorenyin Udi, an engineer and the group's 'permanent' President, led the felicitations, describing Eduwem as "our erudite Prof." and wishing him "greater days ahead." This sentiment was echoed by numerous other members of the alumni network, highlighting the high esteem in which he is held by his peers.
Endorsement from the Medical Community
Beyond his schoolmates, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Akwa Ibom State branch, formally congratulated Professor Eduwem on his new role. The association's Public Relations Officer, Dr. Gabriel Eyo, characterized the appointment as a "well-deserved emergence." He attributed this to Eduwem's years of dedicated service, academic excellence, and proven leadership.
Dr. Eyo specifically pointed to Eduwem's successful tenure as the Dean of the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, which was noted for firm guidance, institutional progress, and a strong commitment to training health professionals. "We are confident that the College of Health Sciences will continue to grow and excel under his leadership," Eyo stated, citing Eduwem's depth of experience and clear vision for medical education and healthcare delivery.
Adding to the chorus of support, the Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) Chapter also extended its felicitations. The Secretary, Solomon Bassey, conveyed the congratulations of the entire MDCAN UUTH family, celebrating what they called a "testament to your impressive stewardship."
A Vision for the Future
In their statements, both the NMA and MDCAN expressed unwavering confidence in Professor Eduwem's ability to excel in this elevated role. They wished him a successful and rewarding tenure, praying that his leadership would bring prosperity and unparalleled success to the college community. The groups collectively beseeched God to grant him the wisdom and mercy needed to satisfactorily carry out his assigned tasks in this important office.
The widespread acclaim suggests a strong consensus that Professor Eduwem's appointment is a positive step for the College of Health Sciences. Stakeholders anticipate that his proven track record in academic and clinical leadership will usher in a new era of growth and excellence for the institution, further solidifying its role in producing top-tier health professionals for Nigeria.
