PTDF Screens 424 Candidates for Overseas Petroleum Scholarships Nationwide
The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) has successfully screened a total of 424 applicants for its prestigious foreign scholarship program. This initiative is designed to support advanced studies in petroleum-related disciplines at both the masters and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) levels abroad.
Nationwide Selection Process for Energy Sector Development
This comprehensive screening exercise is a nationwide effort aimed at identifying the most qualified beneficiaries. These individuals will undertake critical development research and contribute significantly to Nigeria's energy sector. The selection process is meticulously structured to ensure that only the best candidates are chosen to represent the country in international academic institutions.
In the North East region specifically, the Fund has shortlisted 266 candidates for masters degree programs and an additional 158 for PhD studies. This regional breakdown highlights the Fund's commitment to equitable representation across the country.
Three-Stage Screening Methodology Explained
Speaking at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University on Tuesday, Deputy Manager Services of the College of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Sirajo Abdullahi Fari, detailed the rigorous three-stage selection process. The first stage involves system verification, where applicant data is cross-checked for accuracy and completeness.
The second stage consists of document screening by PTDF personnel, who meticulously review academic credentials, research proposals, and supporting materials. Finally, the third stage involves vetting by a team of independent consultants who provide expert assessment of candidate qualifications.
Two Decades of Human Capital Development in Oil Sector
According to Fari, PTDF's primary mandate is to develop human capital to address the persistent manpower shortages in Nigeria's oil and gas industry. The agency has been sponsoring students for overseas studies for the past twenty years, with numerous development contributions recorded during this period.
"We have been receiving testimonies that our former scholars are now part of the workforce at the newly built Dangote Refinery, Shell, and other major energy companies," Fari revealed. "Many others have become professors who are now deployed as panelists in our selection processes."
He emphasized that the Fund consistently insists on merit-based selection, ensuring qualified candidates emerge regardless of their social status, ethnic background, or personal connections. This commitment to fairness has become a hallmark of PTDF's scholarship programs.
Independent Panelists Ensure Merit-Based Assessment
One of the panelists, Professor Abubakar Isa Bello from Bayero University, Kano, confirmed the independence of the assessment process. "We have been given clear guidelines to follow," he stated. "Our recommendations are based solely on our professional assessment, and the Fund makes the final decision based on our input."
This separation between assessment and final selection helps maintain the integrity of the process and prevents any potential interference from PTDF officials.
Applicants Praise Transparent Selection Process
Atiku Birama, an applicant from Gombe State, commended the officials for their professionalism. "The officials have been friendly and transparent throughout the process," he said. "It is encouraging to see how seriously PTDF takes the selection process. The presence of experts and panelists makes us feel that this scholarship is truly merit-based."
Fatima Abdullahi, a candidate from Bauchi State, added that the experience has been valuable regardless of the outcome. "Even if I don't get selected, this process has boosted my confidence," she noted. "It has taught me how to properly present and defend my academic aspirations."
