Renowned legal luminary, Prof Yusuf Olaolu Ali SAN, has made a significant pledge to bolster infrastructure development at Yakubu Gowon University (YGU) in Abuja, formerly known as the University of Abuja. This commitment follows his conferment with an honorary Doctor of Laws (LLD) degree, recognizing his profound contributions to the legal profession and national development.

Prof Ali announced his support during the institution's combined 29th and 30th convocation ceremony held in Abuja. The honorary degree was formally approved by the university's Governing Council at its 83rd extraordinary meeting, underscoring the high esteem in which he is held. In his address, Ali assured the university community that he would actively contribute to addressing key infrastructural challenges within the next two years. He emphasized the critical need for sustained investment in facilities to keep pace with the institution's rapidly growing student population, highlighting how such improvements are essential for maintaining academic excellence and competitiveness.

At the same event, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Hakeem Fawehinmi, disclosed that a total of 17,300 students graduated across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. He noted that Yakubu Gowon University is undergoing a comprehensive repositioning strategy, which includes infrastructure expansion, staff development initiatives, and forging strategic partnerships. These efforts are aimed at elevating academic standards and enhancing the university's competitiveness on both national and international fronts.

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Abel Enitan, reaffirmed the Federal Government's unwavering commitment to strengthening the education sector. This commitment is demonstrated through sustained investment, improved infrastructure projects, and enhanced welfare programmes for staff. Prof Ali, who was born on September 7, 1956, and called to the Nigerian Bar in 1983 before being elevated to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria, also took the opportunity to charge graduating students. He urged them to remain focused, resilient, and committed to excellence as they embark on the next phase of their lives, drawing from his own illustrious career as a guiding example.
