Tragedy Strikes as Two Young Men Drown in Otammiri River in Owerri
In a heartbreaking incident, two young men, believed to be students of the Federal Polytechnic Nekede in Owerri, have tragically drowned in the Otammiri River located in the Imo State capital. The unfortunate event reportedly took place on Saturday when the victims, accompanied by a group of friends, decided to go swimming in the river. According to eyewitness accounts shared with Punch, the group had visited the river not only for swimming but also to take photographs, turning what was meant to be a recreational outing into a devastating loss.
Ignored Warnings Lead to Fatal Consequences
An anonymous source revealed that a local resident had cautioned the young men against swimming, especially as evening approached, but they allegedly disregarded this advice. The source detailed that the victims ventured into the deeper sections of the river, where they lost their footing and subsequently drowned. This highlights the dangers associated with swimming in unfamiliar or risky waters, underscoring the importance of heeding safety warnings from locals.
Authorities and Student Leaders Await Confirmation
Destiny Nwosu, the President of the Student Union Government at Federal Polytechnic Nekede, confirmed that two individuals had drowned in the river. However, he emphasized that it has not yet been established whether they were students of the institution. “Yes, I heard that two people drowned at the Otammiri River, but up until now, we have not confirmed that they were students of our school,” Nwosu stated. “For now, I cannot confirm whether they were Nekede Federal Polytechnic students or from other institutions in the state, or even if they were students at all.”
Similarly, Dr. Ike Ibe, the institution’s Public Relations Officer, indicated that the school management was unaware of the incident, stating, “The school management is not aware of such an incident.” This lack of official information has left many questions unanswered regarding the identities and affiliations of the victims.
Social Media Reports and Unverified Claims
Daniel Promise, President of the National Association of Imo State Students at the Federal Polytechnic Nekede chapter, mentioned that he learned about the tragedy through a video circulating on social media. “I saw the video on social media, but up till now, we have not confirmed that they were students of our school. No coursemate or anyone has confirmed that the victims were our students,” he explained. Despite these uncertainties, sources have claimed that one of the victims was identified as Chukwudi Okwuchukwu, a National Diploma I Computer Science student, while the second victim, known simply as Igwilo, was reportedly a friend of one of the four individuals who went swimming.
These sources added that the bodies of the victims have been recovered and deposited in a morgue, bringing a somber close to the search efforts. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks involved in aquatic activities and the need for heightened safety measures, particularly among young people engaging in recreational pursuits near water bodies.
