UI Graduate Reflects on Transformative Impact of 2003 ASUU Strike
A University of Ibadan graduate, Ola John Oluremi, has publicly recounted how a prolonged six-month strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in 2003 fundamentally altered the course of his life for the better. In a detailed LinkedIn post published on March 20, 2026, Oluremi described this period not as a setback, but as a pivotal opportunity for personal growth and skill acquisition.
Turning Disruption into Productive Self-Development
While the majority of students opted to return home during the strike, Oluremi and a small group of friends made the deliberate decision to remain on campus, specifically in Kuti Hall. They committed themselves to an intensive regimen of self-improvement, focusing on broadening their knowledge through extensive reading. Their studies spanned diverse fields including leadership, administration, management, business, history, and politics, aiming to stay relevant and informed during the academic hiatus.
In addition to their academic pursuits, the group dedicated time to mastering practical computer skills, such as using Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. They also engaged in various hands-on activities to enhance their resourcefulness and physical well-being. These included learning to swim through regular practice at the UI swimming pool, initiating a small-scale fish farming project, and even exploring the art of popcorn making.
Financial Sacrifices and Staying Informed
Oluremi emphasized the sacrifices made to achieve their goals, noting that they allocated their limited financial resources towards purchasing books and newspapers. To stay current with global and local news, the group invested in a small transistor radio, ensuring they remained connected to world events throughout the strike period. This holistic approach to self-development, combining intellectual, practical, and informational elements, proved to be immensely rewarding.
A Lasting Legacy of Personal Investment
Reflecting on the experience 23 years later, Oluremi expressed profound gratitude for the decision to engage in personal development during the strike. He highlighted that what many perceived as a negative development was, for him and his friends, one of the most impactful phases of their lives. In his post, he encouraged others to view such challenges as opportunities, stating that the greatest investment one can make is in oneself, especially during critical periods.
Oluremi concluded with a message of perseverance, advising against despising humble beginnings and attributing his success to divine grace. His story serves as a powerful testament to resilience and proactive self-improvement in the face of educational disruptions in Nigeria.
