The University of Ibadan has taken a major step in expanding Nigeria's educational landscape by introducing revolutionary academic programmes designed to meet future global demands.
New Faculties and Cutting-Edge Programmes
During the institution's 77th Foundation Day Ceremony on Monday, November 17, 2025, Vice Chancellor Prof. Kayode Oyebode Adebowale revealed the university senate's approval for establishing two new faculties: Faculty of Nursing and Faculty of Computing. The university is also launching a Department of Aeronautics and Aerospace Engineering within the existing Faculty of Technology.
Several innovative programmes have been forwarded to the National Universities Commission for accreditation ahead of the 2025/26 academic session. These include B.Sc Social Work, B.Ed Educational Technology, B.Sc Ed Computer Science, and B.Eng Biomedical Engineering.
Computing Faculty Drives Digital Revolution
Under the newly created Faculty of Computing, UI has submitted four additional programmes for resource verification: B.Sc Software Engineering, B.Sc Data Science, B.Sc Cyber Security, and B.Sc Information and Communication Technology. These will complement the existing B.Sc Computer Science programme.
Prof. Adebowale emphasized that these initiatives reflect UI's commitment to innovation and research excellence. "Our goal is to increase the number of PhD outputs every academic session while ensuring our undergraduate programmes remain modern, relevant, and globally competitive," he stated.
Academic Excellence and Global Recognition
The Vice Chancellor provided updates on recent convocation ceremonies, revealing that 5,900 students graduated at undergraduate level, including 448 with First Class honours. At postgraduate level, 2,690 students received academic Master's degrees, 273 earned Professional Master's degrees, and 487 candidates were awarded PhDs.
UI's academic quality has gained international recognition, with the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026 placing the institution as Nigeria's top-ranked university and within the 801–1000 band globally among 2,191 universities across 115 countries.
These strategic expansions position the University of Ibadan to continue producing graduates equipped with cutting-edge skills to address emerging national and global challenges.
