University of Jos Mourns Two Students Killed in Security Incidents
The University of Jos (UNIJOS) community is in mourning following the tragic loss of two students in separate security incidents that occurred in Jos, the capital of Plateau State. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tanko Ishaya, confirmed the devastating news, revealing that the incidents also left two other students and a staff member injured.
Details of the Fatal Attacks
According to Professor Ishaya, the first victim was Abel Joro Gershon, a 300-level Building student. He was shot in the stomach and succumbed to his injuries while receiving intensive care at the University Teaching Hospital on Sunday, April 5, 2026. The second fatality was Adeyemo Oluwafemi Temitope, a 500-level Quantity Survey student, who was shot and killed by hoodlums on Bauchi Road in Jos on April 1, 2026.
Injured Victims and Their Conditions
The Vice-Chancellor further disclosed that three other individuals sustained injuries in these violent episodes. Ishaya Patrick, a 300-level Geography and Planning student, suffered a leg injury on the same day as the attack on Adeyemo and is currently recovering in the hospital. Additionally, Duguryi Ufialas Daniel, a staff member of the Directorate of Student Affairs, was shot in the thigh and is receiving medical attention. Longji Molshap Wumnokol, a 300-level Geology student, was also shot but survived and remains in critical condition in the hospital.
Professor Ishaya emphasized that these incidents have deeply affected the university community, stating, "In total, five members of the University of Jos, including five students and a staff member, resulting in the unfortunate deaths of two students died." This statement underscores the gravity of the situation and the profound impact on the institution.
University and Security Response
In response to these security breaches, the university management immediately engaged relevant security agencies to protect the campus community. Professor Ishaya highlighted that they received robust support from both state and national security forces. Key security officials, including the Commissioner of Police, the Director of the Department of State Service (DSS), and the Command JTF, were deployed to the campus to ensure adequate security and provide reassurance to staff and students.
Furthermore, high-ranking military officials visited the university to assess the situation. "The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Waidi Shaibu and General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division, Jos, Major-General Folusho Oyinlola visited the campus on April 7 to assess the situation," Professor Ishaya noted. He reassured the community that the university has no plans to relocate and maintains a positive relationship with the local community, emphasizing their commitment to safety and stability.
