UNILAG Emerges Top Performer as Federal Government Awards N2.25 Billion to 45 Student Innovators

The Federal Government of Nigeria has taken a significant step toward fostering innovation in higher education by awarding a total of N2.25 billion to 45 students from universities across the country. The landmark Student Venture Capital Grant (SVCG) programme, designed to support student-led businesses and technological advancements, saw the University of Lagos (UNILAG) emerge as the leading institution, with eight of its students each receiving the maximum grant of N50 million.

Grant Distribution and Participating Universities

The presentation ceremony was held on Sunday, March 29, 2026, at the United Nations Development Programme Innovation Hub in Ikoyi, Lagos. The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, and the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, personally handed over the cheques to the recipients. The 45 students were carefully selected from a competitive pool of 65 innovators, highlighting the rigorous evaluation process.

Each student is eligible to receive up to N50 million in equity-free funding, providing substantial financial backing without the burden of repayment or ownership dilution. This initiative aims to transform promising academic ideas into tangible solutions for real-world problems.

Focus on Artificial Intelligence and Societal Impact

A notable trend among the awarded projects is their emphasis on leveraging artificial intelligence and advanced technology to address pressing societal challenges. Many of the innovations target areas such as healthcare, environmental sustainability, and economic development, reflecting a shift toward practical, impact-driven research.

In a related development, UNILAG student Okeke Johnpaul Ebubechukwu recently gained continental recognition at the AI & AMR Symposium 2026 in Kampala, Uganda. His project, AMRScan: A Large Language Model Framework for Real-Time Synthesis of Global Antimicrobial Resistance Research and Emerging Threat Detection, ranked in the top seven percent among over 600 submissions and secured second place in the Best Poster Presentation category. This achievement underscores UNILAG's growing contribution to AI research and innovative public health solutions in Africa.

Government's Vision for Educational Transformation

During the ceremony, Dr. Tunji Alausa delivered a powerful address urging Nigerian universities to prioritize innovation over theoretical knowledge. He stated, "For too long, our tertiary institutions have been seen primarily as centres for certification. But under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, we are redefining that narrative. Our institutions must now become centres of innovation, engines of enterprise, and launchpads for global solutions."

Alausa emphasized that the SVCG programme is designed to unlock the innovative potential of Nigerian students, ensuring their ideas transcend the classroom and contribute to societal advancement. He added, "Now, our students will not only learn, but they will create knowledge... They will also operate at the highest levels of Bloom's taxonomy, applying transformative critical thinking and research skills to advance the frontiers of knowledge and solve real societal problems."

The minister further highlighted that equipping graduates with entrepreneurial skills will transform them into job creators rather than job seekers, thereby driving sustainable economic growth and development in Nigeria. He encouraged students to focus on projects that deliver broad societal benefits, not merely financial profit.

Encouragement from the Minister of Communications

Also in attendance was the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, who offered words of encouragement to the student innovators. He advised them to remain committed to their ideas even in the face of failure, urging them to persevere and continuously refine their projects to achieve greater societal impact.
