The University of Ilorin, affectionately known as UNILORIN, has reached a significant milestone in its history as it celebrates fifty years of outstanding academic achievement and institutional growth. What began as a small academic institution has transformed into Nigeria's premier university, setting unprecedented standards in education and research.
From Humble Beginnings to National Prominence
Established by the Federal Government in August 1975, UNILORIN began its journey as one of Nigeria's seven second-generation universities. The institution commenced operations in October 1975 as a University College affiliated with the University of Ibadan, under the leadership of its pioneer head, the late Professor Tekena Tamuno.
Professor Oladipo Akinkugbe succeeded Professor Tamuno in December 1975 and became the institution's first Vice-Chancellor when it gained full university status in October 1977. The university has been guided by eleven Vice-Chancellors throughout its history, with Professor Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN currently steering the institution toward greater heights.
From its initial three faculties - Arts, Education, and Science - UNILORIN has expanded dramatically to encompass sixteen faculties today. These include Basic Medical Sciences, Engineering and Technology, Law, Social Sciences, Management Sciences, and several others, totaling 108 academic departments.

UNILORIN's remarkable growth is matched by its consistent academic performance and national recognition. Since the 2013/2014 academic session, the university has maintained its position as Nigeria's most sought-after institution for admission seekers, according to annual records from JAMB and NUC.
The institution currently hosts approximately 50,000 students and employs 3,476 staff members, drawing talent from across Nigeria due to its central location and attractive working environment. The university's Centre for International Education has played a crucial role in attracting international staff and students, further enhancing its global profile.
Several factors contribute to UNILORIN's outstanding reputation, including its stable academic calendar, high moral standards, academic excellence, and beautiful campus environment. The university has also become a breeding ground for top talent, with head-hunters frequently approaching its graduates to lead new academic institutions or revitalize existing ones.
Innovation and Global Engagement Under Current Leadership
Professor Egbewole, the university's eleventh Vice-Chancellor, has built upon the strong foundation laid by his predecessors since assuming office on October 17, 2022. His administration has introduced the ambitious Vision 1 – 10 – 500 strategy, aiming to position UNILORIN as Nigeria's best university, among Africa's top ten, and within the world's 500 leading institutions.
Under Professor Egbewole's leadership, UNILORIN has strengthened its international presence through active participation in global academic associations. He currently serves as Secretary General of the Association of West Africa Universities (elected in 2023) and Vice-President (Western Africa) of the Association of African Universities (elected in 2025).
The university has made significant strides in digital transformation, completely digitizing the process for requesting and issuing academic transcripts. Research excellence remains a cornerstone of UNILORIN's mission, with researchers having secured 36 patents with the National Office of Technology Acquisition and Promotion.
As UNILORIN celebrates its golden jubilee, the institution stands as a testament to what focused leadership, academic dedication, and institutional stability can achieve in Nigeria's educational landscape.
