UNIMED Graduates First Cohort of 90 Caregivers, Vows to Boost Healthcare Manpower
The University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED) in Ondo has marked a significant milestone by graduating its first set of 90 students from the Professional Diploma in Health Assistance and Caregiving programme. This inaugural graduation ceremony, held at the institution's main auditorium on the Odosida Campus, underscores UNIMED's dedication to enhancing healthcare delivery through the development of skilled manpower.
Commitment to Strengthening Healthcare Sector
During the event, the Vice-Chancellor of UNIMED, represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Patrick Osho, emphasised that this achievement directly addresses the growing demands within Nigeria's healthcare sector. He described the occasion as both a celebration of academic success and a testament to the graduates' character, highlighting their compassion, resilience, and commitment to service.
Professor Osho stated, "This graduation is not only a recognition of academic success but also a reflection of your compassion, resilience, and commitment to service. The programme was designed to equip students with practical skills needed to function effectively on the frontline of care, playing instrumental roles in restoring dignity and providing comfort to patients across diverse healthcare settings."
Upholding Professional Standards and Empathy
He further urged the graduates to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and excellence in their careers, noting that UNIMED remains committed to producing professionals who combine technical competence with empathy. This approach aims to foster a healthcare workforce capable of meeting complex patient needs with both skill and compassion.
Caregiving as a Calling and Lifelong Learning
Professor C. J. Olowookere, the Director of the Programme, reinforced the importance of the caregivers' role, describing caregiving as a calling. He explained that carers serve not only as healthcare providers but also as companions, advocates, and sources of hope for vulnerable individuals.
Professor Olowookere added, "I encourage all graduates to embrace lifelong learning and prioritise self-care. Continuous professional development is essential in an evolving healthcare landscape, ensuring you remain effective and compassionate in your duties."
This graduation event highlights UNIMED's proactive efforts to bolster Nigeria's healthcare system by training dedicated caregivers, with plans to expand such programmes to further support national health manpower development.
