UNIMED inducts first food scientists to boost health

The University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED) in Ondo City has reached a significant academic milestone with the formal induction of its pioneering set of food scientists. This historic event, held on November 24, 2025, marks a crucial step in the institution's mission to improve public health through nutritional science.

A Call to Action for Community Health

During the induction ceremony, which took place at the Main Auditorium of the Odosida Campus, the central message was a powerful call for advocacy. Professor Abiodun Adeola, a leading expert in food technology, delivered a compelling address, highlighting the direct link between diet and widespread health challenges. He emphasized that many serious health issues could be effectively managed by making smarter dietary choices.

Professor Adeola, who was represented by Associate Professor Dare Adekoyemi, spoke on the theme 'Impacting Communities through Functional Foods: A Pathway to Sustainable Development'. He expressed concern that numerous beneficial, locally-available foods are being underutilized and are at risk of disappearing. "Good food serves as a solution to the health issues happening around us," he stated, urging the new professionals to take up the mantle of public education.

The Multifaceted Power of Functional Foods

The professor outlined the extensive benefits of integrating functional foods into everyday diets. He explained that these foods are not just about sustenance; they are a cornerstone for building a healthier society. According to his presentation, functional foods contribute to:

  • A more resilient and secure food system.
  • Significant improvements in public health outcomes.
  • A lower risk of chronic, non-communicable diseases.
  • Enhanced gut health and stronger immune function.
  • A reduction in inflammation.

He firmly stated that "your food should be your medicine," and that this approach is a veritable tool for accomplishing Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3) by 2030, which focuses on ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all. He also stressed that successful implementation in communities requires a coordinated effort involving local populations, non-governmental organizations, and government units.

Charging the Pioneers for National Impact

The leadership of UNIMED reinforced the importance of this new cadre of professionals. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ebunoluwa Adejuyigbe, represented by Professor Abdulazeez Abubakar, charged the inductees to uphold the highest ethics of their profession. She highlighted the critical role of food scientists in national development and food security, stating, "As food scientists, no nation can ignore you, as you hold the ace to people’s survival."

The official induction of the six graduates was performed by the National President of the Nigerian Institute of Food Science and Technology (NIFST), Dr. Bola Osinowo, who was represented by Professor Matthew Oluwamukomi. The ceremony also celebrated academic excellence, with Esan Modupe Mary emerging as the overall best-graduating student from this pioneering cohort.

This event positions UNIMED at the forefront of a vital movement to use food science as a primary tool for preventive healthcare and sustainable development in Nigeria.
