The University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED) in Ondo State has officially inducted a new cohort of 1,232 students into its various academic programmes for the 2025/2026 session. The matriculation ceremony, which marks the formal admission of the freshmen, was held at the institution's Odosida Campus.
VC's Charge: Embrace Excellence and Global Standards
Addressing the newly admitted students, the Vice-Chancellor of UNIMED, Professor Ebunola Adejuyigbe, delivered a powerful charge centered on excellence and global competitiveness. A distinguished Professor of Paediatrics and Child Health, Adejuyigbe emphasized that the university is a model institution for medical education in Nigeria.
She outlined the core values expected of every UNIMED student: honesty, dedication, diligence, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. "You are in this institution to learn, unlearn, and relearn with a view to becoming a total person, who will not only be useful to yourself but to society at large," the VC stated.
A Three-Pronged Path to Global Relevance
Professor Adejuyigbe revealed the university's strategic approach to shaping its graduates. UNIMED will adopt a three-pronged methodology of education, enlightenment, and empowerment. This holistic model is designed to ensure that graduates are not only locally relevant but can also compete effectively on the international stage.
"Adopting this approach will make the world be at your feet," she assured the students. The Vice-Chancellor promised that the university would expose them to global best practices in medical and health sciences. However, she stressed that this required reciprocal commitment from the students, including unwavering dedication to their studies and strict adherence to the institution's rules and regulations.
The Marathon of Academic Pursuit
Prof. Adejuyigbe reminded the freshmen that their academic journey is a marathon, not a sprint. The ceremony on December 5, 2025, was just the beginning of a long and demanding process.
"Your programme here is not a sprint; it is a marathon. It requires perseverance and adherence to rules. So, if it is going to be, it is up to you," the VC concluded, placing the responsibility for success squarely on the students' shoulders.
JAMB Presence and Institutional Milestone
The event marked the 11th matriculation ceremony in the history of UNIMED. It was graced by official representatives from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). Abdulkadir Abdulhakeem, the JAMB Coordinator for Ondo State, attended the ceremony, representing the Registrar of JAMB, Professor Is-haq Oloyede. This presence underscores the university's adherence to national standards for admissions.
The matriculation oath was administered to the 1,232 students across both professional and non-professional degree programmes, sealing their formal entry into the university community and setting them on a path aimed at producing globally competitive health professionals.
