UNIPORT Approves Prof Princewill Chike as New VC

The Governing Council of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has officially approved the appointment of Professor Princewill Chike as the institution's 10th vice-chancellor. Professor Chike is scheduled to assume office on July 13, following the expiration of the tenure of the current Vice-Chancellor, Owunari Georgewill, on the same date.

The university's spokesperson, Sam Kpenu, disclosed this development in a statement issued on Friday in Port Harcourt. According to Mr. Kpenu, the appointment was ratified by the university's 17th Governing Council after the successful conclusion of a rigorous selection process.

Mr. Kpenu emphasized that the entire process was conducted in strict compliance with the provisions of the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act and the University of Port Harcourt Act. He stated, "The process involved the constitution of a Search Team and a Joint Council-Senate Selection Board, which carried out the exercise in accordance with extant laws and regulations."

Selection Process

The spokesperson explained that the committees adhered to all procedures governing the appointment of vice-chancellors in Nigerian universities. The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Mao Ohuabunwa, congratulated Professor Chike on his appointment and expressed confidence in his ability to provide visionary leadership for the continued growth and development of the university.

"Professor Chike possesses the capacity to advance the university's vision and sustain its tradition of excellence," Mr. Ohuabunwa said.

Background of the New Vice-Chancellor

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Professor Chike previously served as the Rivers State Commissioner for Health during the administration of former Governor Nyesom Wike. His extensive experience in both academia and public service is expected to bring valuable insights to his new role.
