UNN Shines in Global Interdisciplinary Science Rankings

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has achieved a significant milestone on the global academic stage, securing an impressive position in a prestigious international ranking.

A Prestigious Global Recognition

In the newly released 2026 Global Interdisciplinary Science Rankings (ISR) conducted by Times Higher Education (THE), UNN was ranked as the second best university in Nigeria and an impressive 161st globally. This evaluation, which assessed a total of 911 universities worldwide, highlights UNN's growing influence in the international academic community.

How the Ranking Was Determined

The Interdisciplinary Science Rankings measure institutional strength across three critical areas. Inputs assess institutional support, infrastructure, and funding for interdisciplinary research. Process examines the structures and policies that foster collaboration across different scientific fields. Finally, Output evaluates research publications, citations, global reputation, and the measurable impact of the scientific work produced.

This achievement follows another recent success for the university. Just a few months prior, the Stanford-Elsevier Scientists Ranking had listed 19 scholars from UNN among the world's top two percent of scientists in 2025.

University Leadership Reacts

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Prof. Simon Ortuanya, described this latest ranking as powerful validation of the institution's strategic direction. He stated that the THE ranking underscores the university's enhanced capability to produce research that integrates knowledge from science, engineering, humanities, health sciences, environment, agriculture, and emerging technologies to solve pressing societal problems.

This recognition positions UNN as a leading institution in Africa for interdisciplinary research and innovation, demonstrating its commitment to academic excellence and global impact.
